Regular Meds post surgery>

Recommended Posts

Question about medication's post surgery.. Tomorrow is the big day yay! Just one question (so far).

My regular med's can be crushed.. But how do you guys take your med's the 1st few days? I'm assuming you can't swallow well because of the "sip, sip, sip". And you're not eating applesauce to put it in.. What do your crush your med's in to take them?

Thank you,

Nervous Prep Girl!

I was on Clear liquids for the first week so you are right no yogurt or applesauce. Right after surgery they removed me from metformin thank goodness but they had me continue Nexium, Levoxl and Propanalol.

The Levoxl and Propanalol were small enough to swallow with Water. The Nexium had to be opened and added to liquid to drink. It was gross!

The opening in your new tummy is the size of an eraser head so any pill smaller than that can be swallowed with Water.< /p>

After week 1 they stopped Nexium, High Cholesterol pills. After a month we stopped the high cholesterol and high blood pressure meds which left me with 1 tiny pill and my Vitamins which were all chewable at that point.

They will work with you in the hospital to determine how you should take them, also they will provide liquid pain meds.

I swallowed everything as normal from the day after surgery on! First thing they gave me was two tylenol tablets to swallow-which had me worried! Never crushed anything.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
