Workout supplements?

Recommended Posts

I got so tired of taking so many supplements that I just went ahead and got a potent Multivitamin. When I exercise, I just have Protein before and after. My labs are consistently fabulous.

Caffeine before, Protein (at least 25g) following intense workouts. coffee is the cheapest form of caffeine which is most of the supplements. Cretin might be important, but the jury is out as to how long it takes to get into your system, and it might be better just to have red meat a couple of days a week.

How long post-op are you? All I keep reading is that I won't be able to tolerate caffeine after surgery.

I fuel my workouts with Protein and carbs. I make a big Protein shake with FAGE 0% greek yogurt, a big scoop of Protein powder and whatever mix ins I have on hand. Sometimes nut butter, sometime coffee ice cubes, sometimes a handful of spinach, half an orange, etc... My shakes come out to between 31 - 38 gms of Protein. I typically drink half pre-work out and the rest after. Most work out supplements are designed for body builder and weight lifters and may have more carbs/fat/sugar than a bariatric patient needs to fuel a workout. I just try to have my shake at least 30 minutes before my workout out and the rest during recovery.

@@back2me1987 - good point, I didn't do coffee again until a month after surgery. NOTE: I also didn't do intense workouts until a month after surgery either. You really can't or shouldn't do more than walking the first month post surgery IMHO. I have no problem with my stomach.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
