Artificial Sweeteners

Recommended Posts

I just get whatever, but I have had to cut waaaaay back. The best way I could do that was to not eat or drink the stuff I was using it with. I was so addicted to it that I was going through about 20 packets a day. Plus it made me hungry for sweet stuff all day, and who knows what it's been doing to my kidneys. The closest I get to it now is my sugar-free Jello and popsicles.

I hear the best is Stevia, most natural. I am trying to stay away too, makes me hungry

I use Stevia. I pretty much only use 1 packet in my morning coffee though, so I don't know if it would make much difference what I used!

Stevia, if you don't have access to a health food store for the higher quality. Swerve is in Walmart and it is pretty good.

Isn't a bit of honey the best sweetener or a bit of brown sugar?

I have read that these sweeteners are worst than granulated sugar.

I try to get stevia products when possible. I've heard of flavored liquid drops stevia, but not sure of the brand. Anyone heard of this? Sweet Leaf, I think. Not sure which brand tastes the best, but I'd be interested to know.

Stevia is okay, if you aren't allergic to ragweed. They are in the same family and trigger my hives. There is also a BIG difference between stevia herb you get from the healthful store and the white, processed stuff they sell in the market. I use either dried cranberries, a tsp of raw honey or real maple Syrup. It's about finding a balance. I no longer pile loads of sugar in things, so on the rare occasion I have something like oatmeal, I have the real thing in a smaller dose.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
