Albertville AL Dr. Groves? RNY Newbie

Recommended Posts

I'm on my 7 month journey. Had my first weigh in on Sept. 21st. When I first saw him in March 2015 he seemed to push more towards the band because he has had it done. But I chose RNY because of my families history with diabetes. I have PCOS and very rarely have my period. Maybe 3-4 times a year. My husband and I have actively tried to get pregnant. But my weight keeps getting in the way. Anywho. I'm from Albertville and I have BCBS of AL. I've done a lot of research and I feel RNY is going to suit me best. I was wondering if anyone else in this area has had this done with Dr. GROVES. He said he would ultimately do whichever surgery I wanted. Which made me feel great. Also I have no co morbities. But my BMI is 60. So I'm really hoping I will get approved! I would be heartbroken if I were to be denied! I work graveyard shift so please bare with me if I do not reply in a timely manner. Or if I seem to reply in the weeee hours of the morning. ;) Any friends would be great! Like I said I'm a newbie and I need all the support I can get. Unfortunately I've already run into people who have told me to stay away from surgery. But they don't understand what I've gone through my entire life. It's hard to share with others when all they want to do it tell me what I already know. Anywho. Feel free to share anything with me. I'm usually an open book! Thanks y'all!

Hey! I am from Albertville too and used Dr. Groves. I had lap-band surgery but I am not disappointed in my decision to use him. He has been great and always willing to talk to you if you have questions. I had lap-band June 2nd. I also have BCBS and had to go through the 6 month diet. It seemed like it would take me forever but when I hit month 3 it flew by. I don't regret having this surgery at all, I was lucky enough to have people who support me and my mom actually had lap-band a few years ago. I also have PCOS and actually didn't even have a period for a whole year. We seem to have a lot of health issues in common. Let me know if you have any questions and I would love to become friends and kinda have each other to talk to!! :)

Haley

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
