Hi Everyone. I had my endoscopy yesterday and the Dr told me I have a hiatal hernia and that if I go ahead with the sleeve surgery I would need to have it repaired at the same time. I didn't really have much time to talk to him so I would like to know how having this hernia changes my upcoming surgery.

I had a repair done at the same time. The recovery was not any different from what I can tell. Best of luck to you. Getting the hernia fixed will lessen the chances of having GERD or other major problems with your new stomach.

For me it really didn't. They repaired the hernia at the same time as the surgery and spent one extra day in the hospital (Because I was nauseous from the meds and couldn't get Water down not from the hernia repair. Once they sorted that out I was fine and went home).

I had a hernia repaired at the same time and wouldn't have known it if they didn't tell me about it. It was a complete non-event for me . . . except that my GERD was cured, which was awesome.

My experience echoes the posters before me. I didn't know I had a hernia before surgery. Surgeon discovered it and repaired it while performing my sleeve surgery. My subsequent complications had nothing to do with the hernia repair. I am grateful he took care of it and only wish he'd taken my gallbladder too!!

I've been told that having the hernia increases your chances of the insurance approving the procedure :) (I have one too)

I have an umbilical hernia and a porcelain gallbladder. The Dr said he will remove the gallbladder but not the hernia. Apparently the umbilical hernia if removed is able to come back. I had no idea I had either problems. I just hope having the gallbladder and the sleeve at the same time isn't going to be twice as much pain as just having the sleeve. I have never had surgery before and have no idea how I will handle being put to sleep.

The only pain I had with my gallbladder being removed was the gas from the laparoscopy. ;)

I haven't had my surgery yet, but my surgeon advised if he happens to find one while in there, he'll repair it and it takes an extra 5 mins, then done...from what i can tell recovery time doesnt change much either. he was going to do an endoscopy but decided unnecessary since insurance already approved and i needed to get it scheduled asap. he said he will check while doing the surgery though, im confident it will work out :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
