How did your doc know it was time to take you off BP meds?

Recommended Posts

I'm 2 months post op...40lbs down (175 from sw 215). How will my doc know it's time to pull me off my BP meds? My high BP was weight related and it's the last prescription med I'm on and I am ready to get rid of them!

My surgeon takes almost everyone with HBP off their BP meds at the time of surgery. After that, you are ordered to monitor your blood pressure at home. If your blood pressure gets (and stays) high, then you go back on your meds but keep monitoring in case your BP drops as you lose weight. Most people never have to go back on meds again though. I didn't. I did have to monitor at home and keep logs of my readings. I had to show all my logs at my follow-up appointments with my surgeon and when I checked in with my PCP.

I was taken off one of the meds pre-op and never went back on after surgery. The Water pill took a little longer, maybe 2 months post op... When my average bp went to below 100/60 and I was getting light headed on a regular basis especially upon standing. I'd always been an at home monitorer so I could correlate the light headedness with low bp. I halved the HcTz then eventually gave it up entirely. I think my last check at the Dr was 100\64 (and that was a stressful day at work)! Crazy to think about now as 2 years ago it was not well controlled on 2 BP meds plus an anti anxiety NONE of which I take today!

I take my BP twice a day. One AM reading and one PM reading. They both are on the low side so both my surgeon and my PCP agreed I shouldn't take it at this point. One less med ! ????????????

Know when I got off of my cpap? The second I got home from the hospital. Put it in the closet. Never want to see it

again! ;)

I was on ten meds pre-op. I was off seven of them very quickly, but I still take the blood-pressure cocktail to keep me level. I am at 21 months.

For some the markers for HBP are not resolved by weight loss. For some the weight definitely makes a difference. Day of surgery I was removed from both blood sugar meds and never went back to them. At 4 months out I was removed from my cholesterol med as I am now well into normal range.

Now, for the HBP. I noticed at about 30 pounds lost that I felt dizzy when standing up or bending over, my dose was reduced. Then I felt that again here recently so my dose was reduced again...a bit more and I think I will be fortunate to be off them.

Stay in communication with your PCP and check your own BP at home. Keep a log and send/show it to your PCP at your visits. Your pressure's will change as you lose and they will need to monitor them.

Good luck!

I am 10 days out. Stopped in the hospital and didn't restart. I didn't have very high bp to begin with and only took minimal meds. Had my follow up with my PCP and bp was 114/80. He was happy with that. With future weight loos and exercise I hope for that number to continue to go down.

When your bp gets too low or you are symptomatic, like dizziness, that may be when you doc stops the meds. Or you may ask about a trial off or lowering to see what happens. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
