Uh Oh! I didn't maintain my weight loss.... what to do?

Recommended Posts

Alright peeps, here's the dealio.....

I lost my pre-op weight with my family physician prior to meeting the surgeon. That was in June at 191lbs. Authorization was obtained and surgery date is set. But I didn't notice the little line in my binder of paperwork that said I must maintain that weight. I now weigh 206, oy vey! My surgery is out of town so I have only met my surgeon once. Should I just keep my mouth shut and try to lose the weight quickly? If I don't lose the weight do you think they will send me away on my surgery day?

As a disclaimer I was on a diet medication prescribed by my family physician. Once I decided that I was going to have surgery I went off of it. That's when I put the weight back on.

At this point I can only pray that I lose weight during my 2 week pre-op diet.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I would get back on the medication if it helped... it is only for a short time. Yes, you will also lose on the preop diet, probably easily back under 200 in the 2 weeks. I don't think you would be turned away if they have already approved everything!

Just keep trying to lose as much as you can before your surgery. My surgeon's disclaimer was that if they thought my liver was too large to allow for safe surgery they would not do it. The purpose I think of the pre-op weight is to shrink your liver so keep losing as much as you can.

Well if it helps you any I am on day 10 of my 14 day preop diet. I have lost 9 pounds on the preop diet so far.

I also do try and walk 10000 steps a day which is about 5 miles. Maybe with the preop and lots of walking you can sure drop down pretty quick.

Thanks everyone for the tips and support. Started my drugs again today. I also opted to walk to work instead of driving. I am feeling a lithe better about it now. Think I will just try to lose as much as possible and bite my tongue. Would hate for them to postpone my surgery.

Did you check to see how long you had to be off the meds prior to surgery? My surgeon said one month. You certainly don't want to be sent away for something that simple either. There were several reasons why they said that. So, be sure and check. You worked too hard to get to this point to be sent away!

My doctor didn't say anything about them.

If the medication is phentermine most Drs require you be off it a month because it can mess with anesthesia!

Personally I would take the gamble on showing up a couple pounds heavier than the danger to your health if the medication messes with your anesthesia or they just refuse you.

I was told I needed to be off the phentermine for 2 weeks. Every surgeon is different. Definitely check on that with your md.

Are you on a low carb/high protein/low cal pre surgery diet? If not, do so. This will shrink the liver in time for your surgery.

There was a girl in my group who was in the same boat. They postponed her and made her redo the nutritional part of the program before continuing. The doctors are all different, I would recommend doing your best to get the weight off, an extra exercise a week and a steady date. Also, unless the surgeon specifically told you to stop taking re medication I would go back on it. :)

I went back on the medication and started a boot camp class. Every muscle in my body hurts but I am down 8 lbs! I start my liquid diet next week, hopefully I will lose the last 10 by then. Thanks for your support everyone!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
