What to stock up on.....

Recommended Posts

Hey, i got my date for my surgery, Oct. 28th. I will ask my nutritionist when I have that appointment in a couple weeks, but what can I be stocking up on at this point so that I have some basics already in the pantry? What type of Protein Drinks? Anything else? Thanks

Very little! I still have a lot of what I bought preop, and bought completely different things postop simply because my tastes changed. You won't be housebound, so you'll go out and get what you need as you need it. Buy sample sizes until after your surgery and you know how your taste buds might have shifted. Good luck!

Don't. I am almost 2 1/2 years post op and I still have some of my "stock up". The Protein drinks I thought I'd still like, I didn't. The Soup, I couldn't tolerate. The Protein powder is disgusting.and the Protein Bars were horrible.

Buy some sugar free popsicles, some sugar free pudding and a Gatorade to Water down. Make sure it's stuff your family will also eat or it will go to waste.

I was out driving two days post op, so...

IF I HAD IT TO DO OVER AGAIN I WOULD BUY VERY LITTLE AND SPEND SO SO SO MUCH LESS. MANY THINGS THAT I BOUGHT, I DIDN'T USE. I SPENT A LOAD ON Isopure drinks, THE ONES IN THE GLASS bottles THAT COME IN MANY FLAVORS AND COULDN'T DRINK A SIP OF ANY OF THEM SO THAT WAS MONEY LITERALLY DOWN THE DRAIN, THEY WERE DISGUSTING, I USUALLY SAY GRIN AND BARE IT BUT IT JUST WASN'T POSSIBLE. I WOULD SAY A FEW TINY CANS OF Soups, FLAVORED Protein AND UNFLAVORED, sugar free POPCICLES I THINK ARE A MUST, chicken broth - THE PLAIN, I BOUGHT A FEW OF THOSE FLAVORED BROTHS LIKE CAJUN ETC AND THEY WERE ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE - MAY I ADD THAT I AM NOT A PICKY PERSON AT ALL!!! SF pudding -IF YOU CHOOSE, I WAS STILL TOO AFRAID OF THE CARBS BUT IT WAS ON MANY LISTS I SAW. I GOT A FEW Protein Shots AND GELS JUST IN CASE BUT NEVER USED THOSE EITHER.

Find a Protein drink you can stand with just some Water.

If you can get a sample great, seems so many come in huge cans so you are stuck.

I do have some on hand, too bad I really don't like it :-)

I did get some pre-made Protein drinks I like much better.

have 3 flavors of cream of wheat (plain, maple & cinnamon).

I have a few boxes of different good veggie Soups (small boxes in the fridge), vanilla yogurt & ricotta cheese.

I have plenty of Turkey Hill diet, caffeine free iced tea and crystal light mix.

I have plenty of little Water bottles.

I have my Vitamins & other meds.

I also have gauze, wide paper tape & drain pads (polyester)

Other than that - not much!

I had my surgery on Sept 10th, doing well so far.

I put the Ricotta or Yogurt in the Soup as needed for flavor...

Just make sure to sip, sip, sip!

I still have a couple cans of chicken broth as well. I agree with others, don't stock up until after surgery. Then only taste them before you buy so you don't waste your money.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
