Protein Bars..When did you start?

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone!

I had a question about Protein Bars. My NUT/diet booklet says nothing about them, so I really have no idea when I can and cannot have them. I left a message for my NUT to call me back but figured I'd get some ideas here while I'm waiting for a call back!

I did pick up a handful of Protein Bars (Premier Protein bars..I know they are high in sugar, but I don't plan on eating an entire bar in one sitting and so far nothing that I'm eating is bothering me) because I am struggling with my protein intake. I also bought some high protein RTD shakes to help with this.

I'll be three weeks out from surgery this Wednesday - is it too early to try the bars or am I ok?

Btw, I did not get any bars with nuts..I know it's way too early for those!

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and advice! xoxo

I'm 5 weeks out and I'm not allowed to start my soft foods diet until next week. I'm still on pureed foods for the time being. But of course every doctor is different. Just my experience. ^_^

@@Cervidae So Protein Bars are part of your soft foods diet? I can't start that diet until Week 4 and bars are nowhere in the menu plan. I'm just starting Week 3 this week. Thanks for the heads up, its something to ask my NUT about when/if she calls back! I don't want to start too early :)

that is the soft food plan for my bariatric center. Part of the reason I love them is that they are so, so organized and concise. Hope it helps you. :D

I began using Protein bars around the third month post-op. After RNY gastric bypass surgery, the part of your stomach that processes fats and sugars has been cut away, so consuming them at this point may produce dumping. Plus consuming Protein bars that contain sugar is counter productive when it comes to weight loss. There are many varieties of protein bars that do not contain sugar and provide high levels of protein. They are great when you are on the go and cannot drag your blender around to mix up a Protein shake.

3 months here too. I would say it's a little too soon for you.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the feedback and the knowledge provided by all of you. I haven't heard back from my NUT yet, but I'm pretty sure she'll tell me the same thing that you are all telling me so I will hold off for a while! :)

I was told at 4 weeks ,protein bars as tolerated, no nuts and depends on carbs/surgars etc but my plan is first week clear fluids only, 2nd week , fluids only, 3rd week puree/soft foods 4th week and so on regular foods but It's a limit to oz and so on, but as you can see, everyone diet plan is different and unique as we are as people in general, so wait for the call back from your nut, I hope it's very yummy and your belly can tolerate it, congratulations on your progress and to everyone else as well on this thread

Hi All! My Nut called me and told me since I am doing so well on the diet plan and haven't had any problems, I should be ok to start the Protein bars at 4 weeks as long as they're tolerated and no nuts (Peanut Butter doesn't count!). I let her know the sugar in the bars was 6 grams, which is 1 gram higher than what my sugar goal is every day and she told me if I eat half at a time (which I had planned on doing anyways), I should be fine. She said I can try them this week (start of my 3rd week) if I want to, but to be careful and listen to my pouch.

Even though I am tolerating pretty much everything I'm taking in, I think I'll wait until the start of week 4 before I try these just to be safe.

Again, thank you all for your valuable input!! I appreciate you all taking the time out to share your stories, thoughts and opinions!! xo

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
