General question -- Do they remove any/some of the fat in your abdomen during surgery?

Recommended Posts

I watched a YouTube video on the Gastric Sleeve. Fascinating. But it didn't seem like they suctioned out any of the fat in the abdominal cavity during the surgery. Do they typically remove the fat? If not, why not?

Because they aren't doing a liposuction. That's a different procedure.

Ummmm you're kidding right? Different surgery entirely. Different type of surgeon. Different equipment. Different recovery. What do they have to do with each other?

i belive this is due to the fact that people think the sleeve is eght loss surgery in that you lose weight due to the surgery. Which as we know is not the truth and is part of the problem with the mythology behind weight loss surgeries.

Lol, I watched a similar video, and had similar thoughts as they moved the fat aside..."just take it out!". I know its not that easy. I remember having hernia repair and as the anesthesia was starting to take effect, telling the surgeon to take out any fat he sees. He laughed. I am sure he'd heard that before.

Have you seen video of the skin removal surgery where they remove a mass of fat? It is very complicated because they have to tie off every single tiny blood vessel.

I haven't but that makes sense. I guess it threw me off because they were just moving the fat all over in the video. Thank you :)

I had a thought like that at one point... they pulled a bunch of fat out of the body, did the sleeve or by pass or whatever I was watching and stuffed the fat back in... I was like "come on!" But I get it... I've also watched the the skin removal surgery and it's crazy how many veins there are!

I had no idea people thought WLS involved removing fat from the body.

Live and learn.

The inner fat they move to the side during surgery is the fat that every person has, even if they are thin. It is there to protect your organs, they do not remove it. In overweight people it is just thicker. The fat, as in the fat you are trying to lose and the fact you have suctioned out with Lipo is between the muscle and the skin. That is a different fat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
