Plastics - men's experience

Recommended Posts

Hello guys,

Sleeved in April of this year and have lost about 66 lbs with 30 more to go. I am interested in plastic surgery - namely a neck lift, Tummy Tuck and upper eyelid surgery.

I would like to hear other guys' experience with plastic surgery following weight loss. Cost, satisfaction with procedures, visible scarring, etc? Any help out there?

I'm pretty curious of this as well. I started at 408 and am currently at 319, so quite a ways to go but I know once I get there the skin will be an issue if I meet my goal of losing over 200 lbs

I got some ways to go myself, definitely going to need plastics.

Proud of your progress. Losing weight is not an easy venture and we, who are traveling this road, understand.

Yeah I am about halfway to my goal and it's becoming more clear that I will probably need a lot of help with the excess skin. Guess it's not the worst problem to have...

Never had a big problem with excess skin....maybe it was because I go to the gym everyday, and drink plenty of Water.

But I do go in regularly, every 6 m onths or so, for botox and fillers.....but that's a different area. I do it because of the aging process (gravity) and the fact I deal with the public (patients) everyday so how I present myself is important.

Would love to hear from more folks...I was recently sleeved on 09/11, and was wondering what I had to look forward to as far as excess skin. I have already lost 50 lbs. (30 pre-op, and 20+post), so I know the weight is coming off fast.

I've lost nearly 90 pounds since the beginning of February, about 33 since my surgery in early August. I have noticed that I definitely have some "extra" skin on my arms already. I've been working on some exercises with dumbbells and curl bars to try and curb that. Hopefully, anyway.

As far as plastic surgery experience, I posted in another thread...before I had my RNY surgery, I had talked to a guy that had gastric sleeve surgery in the summer of 2014. He started at 475 pounds six months pre-op and dropped down to 180 in a year. He had lots of loose skin in his arms, stomach, and thighs. I asked him if he had tried working out, doing strength exercises, etc., and he said he had not.

My understanding, with the insurance he and I had, insurance would pay for plastic surgery only if it was medically necessary. For this, it had to be something like rashes that were as a result of the extra skin that couldn't be cured/fixed with other treatments for 6 months. He had just had plastic surgery, though, when I talked to him, on his arms and stomach area. He was going in later to do his thighs (may have to follow up with him since it's been about 3 months). I didn't care for the scars he had on his arms because it looked like he had cut himself, but somebody replied in the thread I posted that those eventually go away. And to be honest, I still felt that he had some extra skin he still could have gotten rid of in his arms, but my knowledge of that of sort of thing is pretty limited.

That's pretty much my only experience with plastic surgery for loose skin. Sorry it isn't my direct experience.

Down 173 with 80 to go and I'm dreading the skin part. That said, I had my varicose veins done and they're healing nicely.

Yo update a little bit, I have lost a few more pounds since I started this thread and now have lost 72 lbs since surgery April 13 of this year. I saw an occulo plastic surgeon about blepharoplasty and after pictures, field of vision tests, and a consultation the surgery is scheduled for this month.

At my last visit about three weeks ago with my Bariatric surgeon I asked about a referral to a facial and neck plastic surgeon. The Bariatric surgeon wasn't opposed to the idea but he felt the plastic surgeon wouldn't consider surgery until at least a year after the sleeve procedure which would mean April of '16. I see him again n February and I'm going to press the issue again.

I sure wish I could get. Neck lift and Tummy Tuck but I do understand that many plastic surgeons will want to postpone surgery until all the weight is off and kept off for a year. I still have 25 pounds I'd like to lose. The weight is coming off very slowly now - only about three or four pounds a month instead of every week. I am frustrated with this slow process. I have a mental vision of where I want to be weight wise and wish I was there yesterday.

I've tried alternative procedures to tighten my skin (cold laser, radio frequency and cavitation) and they have helped especially around the belly. My little flap isn't a flap anymore at least. I opted for this because a plastic surgeon I trust told me that he would be unwilling to operate until I was a year out from my weight stabilizing. Sine I am only four months post op I thought I'd try something different and early on.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
