If you document what your weight is at each stall, you will find it was the set point which you started a new diet. I was a chronic dieter before my Duodenal Switch, so my weight loss was very, very, very slow and my stalls were long and frequent. When I went back to each stall, I compared it to my chart illustrating my diet attempts, the weight I was when I tried each one, and sure enough, my stalls corresponded to the ounce what I had documented.

I needed to hear this today. I’m not unhappy with my progress or feeling defeated. I’ve been genuinely afraid that I’m not losing enough or that I’m not doing well because after a lifetime of yo-yo dieting and being told I must be doing something wrong if I’m not losing weight, it’s all I know.

I stalled for 8 weeks just 3 months out from surgery and boom, down 18lbs in the last month. So... I just need to learn to stop checking the scale, basically. They did start to get concerned at my doctor's office about the length of the stall but... I guess we're all different.

It seems that at least 50% of the posts on BariatriPal are bemoaning a stall. Daily, and sometimes hourly, I am reading about how someone ONLY lost x number of pounds and now the scale hasn't moved in ___ [fill in the blank] days/months, etc. Oh no, they write, I am a failure/unique/my surgery didn't work/life is not fair, ... Why am I in a stall?

I know I am exaggerating but I think you get the idea.

Guess what? STALLS are a NORMAL part of the PROCESS of losing weight. If you want to lose weight, you will stall. Not just once, but over and over. And, guess what? A stall is where your body actually does the hard work of becoming smaller. It takes a lot of work and energy to dismantle a structure that has been holding up, in some cases, hundreds of pounds.

Thanks so much! I'm in a stall now and at first I was beamoaning, "What am I doing wrong?" then I realized I'm doing everything I'm supposed to be doing but my body needs to rest for a few weeks. At first I worried that this was all the weight I was going to lose and I need to lose twice as much more yet, but I now understand that I just need to breathe and ride it out. Thank you for this post!

That's very helpful to know that I'm not the only one stalling and that it can start up again when my body's ready. Thanks for sharing.

Doesn't matter that it was 4 1/2 years ago, it still holds up TODAY!

Thank you all so much! I had sleeve surgery on 4/22/19. Total lost (before and after surgery) is 26 lbs. I have "stalled out" the past few days and started to worry that maybe I am doing something wrong. I came here and spent time reading all of your posts and feel so much better. I am absolutely feeling like my clothes continue to get looser every day, despite what the scale says. (I put on a hoodie today that used to be too tight and it hung on me. Also, the shoulders of my suit jackets are now too loose.) I will embrace the stall and understand it for what it is, my body readjusting to all of this and doing the work to get smaller. You guys rock and are such an inspiration to someone new to all of this!

Okay. I’m reminding myself every day for the last 3 weeks to embrace, embrace, EMBRACE this stall!!!
I’m a bit over 3.5 months post-op and ran smack into a wall.
One thing I refuse to do is take my eye off the prize of a healthier, fitter, happier, and smaller me!
NSV are extremely important during this phase and even though my body is in a “still” phase, it got me through an increase in physical activity and it’s still (slowly) losing inches.
More importantly, I’ve dropped about a half pant size while gaining over a pound since the stall started. 🤷‍♀️

I’m still almost 50 pounds from my goal weight, but rising the crest of this stall is important to keep moving forward.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
