Sleeping comfortably after surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm exiled to my recliner... im five days post op and yesterday was my first night home... IT WAS A DISASTER.... I LAID IN bed and somehow landed on my stomach in excruciating pain but was too sore/tender to roll over without causing even more pain .... it was so bad at one point i thought iwas going to end up calling fire rescue .... my dad helps though and about 30 minutes later i got to my back... come morning on my back... i had to figure out once more how to get out of my bed without using my core..... needless to say im traumatized.... so the couch it is. and possibly a full body pillow... or pregnancy pillow...... its good to know im not alone! <3

I'm so sorry you are having such a rough time! If it makes you feel better at all though, now (getting close to 3 weeks post op) I am happy to say that I am sleeping fairly comfortable in bed. I still use LOTS of pillows for support but I have been able to sleep on my back and even on my side for awhile.

Just hang in there, (and of course get on here for lots of encouragement! :P) it will get better with every passing day. Good luck! :)

I had the same exact problem for the first week! I thought I was going to go crazy sleeping on my back(I'm a belly sleeper).

Now, I have found that I can sleep on my side *if* I barely put the edge of pillow under my stomach to kind of stop that pulling sensation.

I'm almost a month out and still can't sleep on my side. The best I can describe the feeling of lying on my side is as if all my insides are pulling away from where they should be and while it is not exactly painful any more, it's very uncomfortable.

Yep- this is how I feel in my side too! I have some pain as well tho because I am pretty new post op-

Woah. I'm so sorry you all are having a rough time. I'm only a side sleeper so now you all have confirmed that I should indeed rent a recliner for at least a month. I cant physically sleep on my back, I get recurring dreams that I'm falling in a hole and am jolted awake. Every. Single. Time. I've had this issue my entire life. My bed is super high, but we have one of those portable steps, but after reading all your experiences as soon as I have a date I'm gonna rent one! Thanks!!!

Thanks for the helpful advice! I'm finding that pillows are indeed my new best friends! lol

It's so comforting to know that I can get on here and get advice from people that know just what I'm going thru. Thanks again everyone! :)

I totally agree!

I feel like I hit gold with this site!

I'm giddy and excited about reading and learning from all these posts!

It's probably going to be my new obsession as I wasn't getting all of my question answered by watching youtube videos

I have one of those pillows with arms that you use to sit up un bed, they're called 'husbands'...lol. really, thats their name. In anycase, im a belly sleeper, and since thats not an option right now, prop the husband up on two pillows and use an addittional one to support my head in whatever position i need. I contemplated a recliner but i dont have the funds. Hope i helped somehow.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
