Welome Lisa in Toronto

I will be getting my port move on July 26 at 3 pm so I won't be able to make the luncheon, bummer since I am the one that wanted to get it happening. I will be there next time for sure.

I am not far and would love a lift! I live at Spadina & Queens Quay. I can come up to your area to meet you.

Sounds great! You can be the navigator, as I was born lacking a sense of direction! Are you in the telephone book?

By the way, is anyone having problems with fatigue and weakness?? I'm exhausted, and break out in a cold sweat every time I expend any energy at all. I realize part of this is from not having eaten solids in 4 weeks (I'm on Day 2 of Full Fluids). But, I'm REALLY exhausted, despite sleeping well. Any suggestions?? I have to get back to work.

I was exactly the same. Very weak and dizzy at times. Are you drinking Protein shakes? That will help. I will PM you with my phone numbers.

Hey DonnaD, glad to hear that you are moving your port to where you originally wanted it since it was causing you problems being on your sternum. I think it takes guts to go through another surgery again. Good for you for making them change it.

Hi Rose.

Don't fret over the surgery, it was really nothing , would do it again tomorrow if need be. I found the hardest part of the whole thing was the pre-op diet. Just keep telling yourself why you have to do it. To shrink your liver. You will do fine. There are so many posts about right after the surgery that you can read non stop till then if you want.

I too was very nervous with the surgery consitering that this is something that I am doing just for me.not an emergency if you get what I'm saying. The guilt of it all if something were to happen, but then I would have a good long talk with myself and to me THIS was an emergency. I am so happy that I had it done, I know this will be my last Fat summer.

My prayers are with you, you will breeze thought it all and look back and wonder what you were worried about.

By the way I am not in TO but in Kitchener -Waterloo almost a suburb these days.

Best of luck.

Bev

Hi to Lisa in TO and to everyone else from Green in TO.

I was at the TLBC this morning in order to get a small defill and I met a clutch of newbies who were coming in for their first fills. This was kinda fun. They asked me lots of questions and this reminded me of my first fill and all the worries I had at the time.

I was banded last September and I am now down around my target weight; I weigh 148 lbs. My BMI is 23.9. I am very, very pleased about all of this. I am, however, finding some of the "shock and awe" reactions which I have been getting kind of strange to deal with. I hadn't realised that people had been noticing that I was fat, you see.

In regard to your questions about the operation, Rose S, I was 57 when I was banded and I had very little difficulty recovering from the surgery. The first 3 days I spent reading, napping, and really enjoying the pain meds while staying in bed. The 4th day I got up, had a bath, got dressed and spent the day on the internet. The worst pains I had were from gas. I should have walked around more than I did; that would have helped make them go away faster.

To Rose S.:

I too beat myself up over "having unnecessary surgery".... plus my Dear Sister kept harping on about it too.... then she said " what if you die?" is it worth it to be thin!"

Dah! dosn't she know I'm at risk of heart attack or stroke from staying fat... that's when i decided to DO IT! I have not looked back nor had any second doubts.

I wake up every morning and feel so excited that I am consistantly losing and giving away my clothes!!!! In the past on diets I would always SAVE a favourite "big" sized garment .... just in case I ever needed it.

Well, no more this time next year I will weight 130 lbs and be muscular... I'm gonna be wrinkled ! as I am 52 yrs old and the fat has plumped up my face nicely for the last two decades...

but heck, I've earned each and every one of those 'laugh lines"..

Good luck to you on your journey and don't forget = we are all here to support one another.

Welcome Lisa and Vince ! I must admid I have a new love of Soup ! LOL

Thank you all for your welcoming words. Now, I have a new question: Jst how many "bumps" are we supposed to be feeling under the skin????

I seem to have two: one round flat one lower down in my abdomen around one of the suture lines, and one higher up on the left side that feels really bumpy and firm. Which is my port, and what is the other one? I shouldn't be feeling the band itself, should I????

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
