unbelievable pain, please read

Originally we were told not to take pills for 3 months, they had to be crushed. Sleeved 8/3. Last week surgeon said I could swallow my pills as 1 tastes so bitter, hard to get down. I took pills around 10pm, a little latter then usual. I had been having some discomfort in left shoulder and left side of neck. I also told this to surgeon last week, and he said it is uncommon, but he sees it alot.

I got this horrendous pain around 11-30pm, and it was bad, under breast area. If I had a gallbladder I would have sworn it was an attack. I was terrified. I got up, got dressed and figured off to ER. I woke husband up, he got dressed and just waited. I thought gas, so took some different things, nothing was helping. I called on call doc, and he felt it was not serious and I had just irritated the sleeve, particularly with the medications. He said go back to crushing my pills and chew, chew, chew. I still feel sore, and will call doc office today, he is usually in surgery, but maybe I can speak with nurse.

Just wondering has anyone else ever experienced anything like this. This pain after 6 weeks out, or later. So scary and just wanted also to let everyone know how this can happen, and be aware of it. Always call your doc office if you get a pain, and don't do like me and rush things. I do tend not to chew like I did weeks 3 and 4. Will go back to some basics. Thanks for listening, I would love some ideas and comments.

The rule most people go buy is that if it's bigger than an m&m then crush it. I'm 4 months out and I just chew up pills larger than an m&m. I used to crush them but that got to be to much of a hassle for me.

I've never had a single complication from my sleeve. I've never experienced the pain you describe. Check your temperature daily. If you notice a fever and the pain continues then it could be sign of a leak. However, please consult your doctor.

Thanks I will. I did take temp last night and this AM, so far normal. He also fixed a hiatal hernia, but on call doc said it had nothing to do with that. It is just weird, sometimes I forget I have the sleeve. After last night it was a big reminder and how we need to take care of it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
