Looking for support!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I am so new to this that I am not even sure I am doing this post right. I am scheduled for my surgery Oct 16th I know this is going to be the push I need to help me become healthy. My biggest concern is my friends and family are against WLS and I need to find a little support before i go in.

Hi, I'm getting sleeved on the 28th of this month. I startthe liver shrinkage diet tommorow-not looking forward to it at all! lol

Don't worry about what other people say, once the weight starts dropping off they'll soon change their tune!

It might be a good idea to check out if there are any weight loss surgery support groups in your area, stop you feeling so alone. My hospital runs a good group that meets once a month, I'm haven't had a chance to attend yet but will certainly be doing so once I have the surgery.

I also attend an in-person support group at my hospital. If there is one near you, you should go. You will meet pre-op people as well as post-op. You might even meet someone having surgery the same day as you and can make friends. I look forward to my monthly meeting. It is nice to see people's progress in person and share stories. It is nice support and also motivation! Good luck! You will do great!

@@Soxgirl Don't fret, there is tons of support. I am day 4 on my 14 day preop diet with surgery on 9/28

I am not saying there aren't issues and challenges but think about all the issues and challenges you have when you just because you're overweight. I almost lost a foot due to infections for uncontrolled diabetes, that is much worse then dealing with people who think WLS is the easy way out or whatever.

Let me share with you a story about how supportive people who have had WLS can be. I was with my family in GNC to get some Protein shakes my Nutritionist said I could have on my pre-op diet. As we were talking to the girl that worked there this man came in and heard our discussion and knew immediately that I was having WLS surgery.

He stood there and talked to me for 30 minutes and gave me advice and tips based on his experience. I have already used some of the advice he gave me while on my pre-op. He even gave me his cell phone number and asked me to touch base once I had my surgery.

Just remember haters are gonna hate. People hate you because you're fat. People are going to hate you because you had surgery. You have to find the strength within to do this for you. For me I do it for me and my daughter because she needs her dad to be there for her for a long time.

My journey has already had a positive affect on my daughter and my relationship with her. She is 9 and they did healthy goals in health class at school. She told the teacher her healthy goal was join daddy on his nightly walks. So last night she joined me on my walk. I hope that my positive changes can have long term affect on her so she doesn't face the challenges I had being overweight my whole life.

I'm new here too! So far I've been able to tell my close family. And a couple really close friends. But I've run into some who are against it. And some who want to be my "personal trainer". Really? I have lost weight time and time again. I just want to be able to take back my life. I've been overweight since I was in 3rd grade. I still have 6 months til I submit my ins. But I wanted to get to know some people on here to help prepare me for anything that may come my way.

The time goes so fast, I didn't tell anyone until I was about four months in, people have said the same to me, I can train you or my favorite is, you don't look like you need to lose that much weight, you could just work out harder. I've done EVERY diet out there, I do well then I quit and gain back double, this is a tool I need to help me make the lifestyle changes I need.

Exactly! I wont be telling anyone else until closer to if not when I get to the acceptance stage with the insurance. I've made up my mind and some people just think its easy. It took me two years to lose 60lbs. And then a little over a year i gained it back plus 40 for a total of 100! It irritates me how much weight I've lost through the years. I'm SO glad you said the time goes by fast! That makes me feel so much better!

@@Soxgirl This site has been such great support for me as a pre-op patient. It has given me real insight to how my life is going to change. Even if it isn't face-to-face support, you can always turn to the people on here to give you that push!!!

I wish you luck and happiness in your journey!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
