Names of insurance companies that cover the sleeve, please?

Recommended Posts

Hi, my current insurance doesn't cover the sleeve and I'm considering Mexico. I'd like to try one more thing: buying a second insurance policy that does cover the procedure.

The only problem is that I don't know who does or doesn't cover it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Which insurance companies should I check out? Thank you!!

I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield Empire PPO. We're under the police insurance - but I know a lot of the BC/BS plans cover it. Good luck!

I had United Health Care - Oxford, when I had mine. They ask for a lot of proof that you really medically need the surgery, as nothing else has work for you, but once you give it to them, they approve it, good luck ;)

It's not so much which insurance companies cover it, as which plan includes it. Each insurance company offers dozens to hundreds of different plans, some for individual purchase and some for employers. When employers purchase a group plan, they have to affirmatively include a special rider for bariatric surgery coverage. So my employer offers plans through Cigna and Blue Cross that do cover bariatric surgery. Someone else I know works for a different company with a Cigna plan that does not include bariatric surgery. Most plans for individual sale do not include bariatric surgery. I think your best bet is to work with an insurance agent and tell him/her up front exactly what you are looking for. Make sure you see the plan documents (member benefit handbook etc.) up front before purchasing so that you can see for yourself whether weight loss surgery is included, what the requirements are for approval, and whether there is a waiting period.

If you purchase insurance through a government exchange, some states require that bariatric surgery be included. However, I see you are in Alabama, and Alabama is not one of those states as far as I can determine.

That was very helpful. Thank you! I'm in Louisiana, though, not Alabama. But still, I understand what you're saying. Thanks again!

Not to hijack the thread, but for those who have United healthcare, what do you think of it? My employer is going to united after being with cigna for as long as I've been employed here.

United Healthcare it's not bad, I had access to good hospitals/doctors, but, very high co-pays :/

Anthem BC/BS. My husband works there so we have an employee plan. I didn't have any insurance requirements other than to provide info on my past dieting experiences.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
