Caution- Chew Food to Applesauce!

Recommended Posts

Had a horrible experience today and want to caution all the newbies (which includes me). I had surgery on Sept 1st. No issues. I'm back to work, had a busy day today at work. I was in Court all day for work with no lunch break (probation officer), so I got home and was going to eat the other half of my sesame chix lean cuisine left from last nite. I was talking to my husband and not paying attention. I obviously didn't chew well enough and took about 3 bites pretty fast. The food got stuck in my throat and would not go down. I tried for 45 minutes to throw it up and made small progress, but more than anything a frothy liquid only came out. Finally after 45 minutes of pain, seriously felt like a heart attack, the remaining food went down that I didn't throw up. I looked at the food that I threw up and it was barely chewed. What the hell was I thinking!!!! This post is a reminder to all to not get caught up in old behaviors, pay attention to what you are eating, slow down, and chew to Applesauce. I never want to go thru this horrible painful experience again. I just kept praying to God to help me with relief. Hope someone takes away something from this post and avoids such an unnecessary experience.

Last week I was not chewing well enough and my food was stuck in my pouch. I couldn't keep anything down. I ended up back in the hospital to have endoscopy to get it cleared. chicken was hanging out in there along with whatever I ate after that. Hard lesson to learn. Chew chew chew!!

I sometimes use a mini food processor to chop up food before I eat it. The other night I made a roast beef for my wife and chopped my portion with a little gravy in the Cuisinart. Tasted great and well tolerated.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
