Your surgeon's post-op liquid/food phases

Recommended Posts

I see so much variation on here with different surgeon's post-op liquid/food phases, it's incredible actually. My surgeon is very conservative.

Phase 1 - Clear liquid diet (days 1-14)

Phase 2 - Protein drinks, creamed Soups (week 3-8)

Phase 3 - Full liquid/Blenderized (week 9)

Phase 4- Soft to Regular Foods (week 10)

Foods to add after 11 weeks: Shrimp, scallops, lobster, salmon, halibut, soft cooked vegetables, cold cereals less than 3 grams of sugar, toasted bread

Foods to add after 12 weeks: Soft bananas, apples, melons, peaches (no skin on fresh fruit), plain lettuce, low fat dressing

Foods to add after 13 weeks: chicken or turkey without skin, chicken or turkey salad, ground turkey, chicken meat, fajita meat, soy products, refried Beans, Peanut Butter, Pasta, untoasted bread

Foods to avoid for 6 months after surgery: red meat, pork, raisins, grapes, nuts, seeds, popcorn, corn, alcohol

Next week I enter phase 2 and will be there for 5 weeks....sigh...going to have to google some good creamed Soups. Compliancy is not an option for me, this was a HUGE surgery and I get one shot at it. The good news is that in 2 weeks, I'm down 22 pounds. That's crazy, right?

Not crazy at all...it is amazing tho! Enjoy it and keep up the compliance.

I had to do a 2 week pre-op diet of Protein shakes, sf pudding, light yogurt and Water.

Week one post-op was 3 Protein Shakes a day with all the Water I could do.

Week 2-4 was soft foods (including eggs, flaky fish and deli chicken/turkey. One Protein shake a day and fluids.

Week 5 was reintroducing regular foods slowly. No nuts til 3 months.

Mine was relatively easy compared to some but I did tolerate everything well and have had no issues. 4 months post op and down 61 pounds since surgery and 91 total from pre-op to now.

My surgeon's plan allows real food very early on. I was having cottage cheese and yogurt on day 3. He's been doing it this way for years with no problems. Here is what the plan looks like:

I also did a YouTube video describing my first few weeks, since it is SO different from most of the plans I see. No clear or full liquid phase at all once I was discharged.

My surgeon is pretty aggresive about returning to regular food.

Day 1 and 2: Clear bariatric liquids (Water, crystal light, sugar free Jello or popsicles

Day 3-6: Add in yogurt, applesauce, skim milk, lowfat cream Soups, hot thinned Cereal (i.e oatmeal)

Day 7-13: Add in cottage cheese, refried Beans and/or soft eggs

Day 14-Week 7: Add in soft Proteins (i.e. deli turkey or chicken, baked fish) and well cooked vegatables (nothing raw)

Week 8 and beyond: Most regular foods, well chewed and as tolerated

It's just so crazy the variations! Envious of your post-ops, that's for sure!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
