Anyone ever been denied after insurance company has approved surgery?

Recommended Posts

Once I was approved for bypass last month my weight dropped like a rock, no matter what I eat! My band will be removed and I am suppose to have the RNY. My pre-op class is next week, my pre-op Dr. consultation in 2 weeks. My weight is strangely dropping, I have no idea why - I have purposely tried not to lose weight because my bmi was around a 38. now it is around a 35 (unless my scale is wrong!) I have been unable to lose weight for years and now it is coming off without me trying. Great if I wasn't looking forward to the surgery. Bad because i want the surgery.

Has anyone ever been denied after they were approved? Like on the day of surgery? I'm really bothered by this!!

I don't mean to frighten you, but unexplained weight loss can be a sign of other illness. You should definitely discuss this with your dr. You don't want to undergo surgery if there is something else going on with you.

I agree with notinks-- unexplained weight loss should be investigated. When i was losing weight rapidly w/o explanation I learned my thyroid was out of whack.

In terms of surgery-- my understanding is they go with the initial weigh in-- but every insurance company/doctor's office is different.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
