Vitamins making me nauseated

Recommended Posts

Hello Family ♡ ...Surgery was 9/2 and today was my first post op appt. I'm down from June 5-410 to 367 to 345. YAY????!!! My surgeon said to go ahead and start Vitamins now. Tonight, I took my first Vitamin (Celebrate chewable Multivitamin w/iron) and I got extremely nauseated. Watery mouth, lump in my throat, heart palpitations...the whole nine yards...I ran to the bathroom, put a Zofran in my mouth and it subsided. Has this happened to anyone before? If so, is this normal? Any advice so that it may not happen again? I have a major fear of vomit...so my experience was 18265380348 times worse and I've been crying for the past hour... :(

I was taking a liquid Vitamin from GNC and no matter what I tried it made me nauseated. Gal kept telling me smoothies. But I could still taste the Vitamin and get sick. One day I tried putting them in blender with a premier strawberry shake. It really worked. Hope you find something that works. And maybe it had something to do with it being a few weeks after surgery that I could finally take the Vitamins.

I have read that sometimes the Iron in the Vitamin is what can trigger the nausea. Perhaps you can try an Iron free Vitamin for the time being?

Hey there...thank you...I'm thinking that might be it too. I'm going to call my nutritionist first thing tomorrow morning and see if she's ok with me doing that or maybe starting with a vitamin that's no so potent at first and build up to the bigger ones. :)

I can definitely try to blend them. That may work. It wasn't the taste or texture...it was after I ate it...about 5 minutes later, it hit me. :( Maybe it is because I'm still so early out from surgery. Tomorrow is my 2 week post op day!

@@VanessaVSGforme - Hey there. I'm taking the same Vitamin (Celebrate Multi with iron), and so far I've been about 50/50 with it. I had tried it Pre-Op and liked it fine, but since I've had it post op.... The first morning I took it, it was less than 5 minutes before I was throwing it right back up. I thought maybe it was because I took it on an empty stomach. Day two, I tried it shortly after eating a scrambled egg and it stayed down. Day three I tried the exact same thing, but it didn't stay down. Since it was the only thing coming up, I thought maybe I waited too long after the egg.

So lately I've tried taking it with a 1 cup glass of Fairlife fat free milk. I'll have my scrambled egg, wait half an hour for liquids, then take the Vitamin with the milk and so far it's staying down. The milk also helps cut the vitamin flavor that seems to be much stronger now. At my 2 week post appointment, my doctor said I may have to try the capsules if I can't consistently handle the chewable.< /p>

This is great information!! Thank you so much and I'm so GLAD I'm not the only one. When you say that you "take the vitamin with milk" are you crushing the vitamin and adding it to the milk and then drinking it? I've never been a huge fan of milk unless it was in Cereal with lots of sugar... -_- but now that isn't an option so I may not be able to drink straight plain milk. If you switch to capsules...will you have to open them up and sprinkle them on something? I was the same way! Before surgery, I was just fine! Now, not at all. It's not the taste or the texture...because it went down fine, but within 5 minutes, I was on the verge of tossing my "vitamins"... :(

UPDATE: I called my nutritionist and she said it's too early to give up and move to a less potent Vitamin. She advised to get something in my tummy and wait about 30 minutes and try again but a half at a time. So I started my premier Protein around 6am...finished by 845-9 and around 945 am, I chewed up half tablet and was fine!!! :) Hoping for this same result when I take the other half. Today, I got to start puréed foods too!!! So just about 30 minutes ago...I whipped a scrambled egg up and 2 T oatmeal. I ate maybe 1/3 of the 1 scrambled egg and a tiny bite of oatmeal and I'm completely STUFFED!!! No issues with nausea either!! ;)

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP!!! ❤

I'm glad you found something that worked! I switched to nutrametrix at about a month out because I kept getting nauseated with the chewables. You mix the Calcium and multivitamin together with eight ounces of Water once a day and that's it! Tastes a little like orange juice and I didn't have to remember to take Vitamins or calcium throughout the day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
