ALMOST ONE MONTH IN...

Recommended Posts

Hey. I'm 25yo and had a sleeve done on the 21st of august. I'd say now that the first week post surgery is over I'm doing okay, for the most part.

I joined here, because I'm hoping someone can help me!

I'm constantly aware about times to eat, drink and what I'm eating/drinking. Since my diet is limited, and bland, and altogether unpleasant (due to beneprotein). I'm miserable, and not eating 6x a day like I'm supposed to. I threw up once already recently because I ate too fast and since I've been terrified of overeating.

On the flip side, I'm terrified I'm not eating enough and making this worse rather than better. When I met with the nutritionist I understood the importance of adding the Protein, and eating right to regulate my metabolism, but it's challenging to say the least. I don't have an interest in meals most of the time, and when I do feel hungry i'm lucky if I get through a 1/4cup portion.

So, what can I do to make this less of a pain in the ass? Is it really that big of a deal if I'm eating 3x instead of 6x? I'm open to meal suggestions too. I'm in the part of the process where I'm supposed to be on a "pureed" diet, and sensitive to salty/sweet foods. (I tried unsweetened strawberry/kiwi apple sauce recently and it was waaaayyy too sweet for right now.)

I'm also finding that my muscles around my ribcage where they made a few incisions are tender constantly and have a mind of their own. Sometimes it's like I'm flexing, but I'm completely relaxed. Sometimes it's tight and has spasms, I'm even prescribed muscle relaxants (primarily for back pain) and those muscles are doing everything but relax. I'm uncomfortable most of the time and it's now encouraging the bitchy beast inside of me to come more often than I care to admit.

It's not fun being sore, hungry, and sad. Someone help me please!

Thanks!

Surgery was 8/18 for me. My MD and nutritionist says 3 meals only. Avoid Snacks for the most part, focus on Protein and Water, limit/avoid carbs. I don't have any restriction on consistency of food.

At one week out the hunger is probably in your head unless you are having acid reflux. I took otc meds for acid reflux for the first week, some take them for longer. Focus on getting in Protein for now and fluids. The rest will come as you are able to tolerate more. You definitely have to slow down and not eat so fast. Put your utensil down between bites, it will help.

Good luck!

I downloaded an app called "next bite" to help me slow down when I ate. It is a timer that goes off at the interval you choose. I set it for one minute, and chew my small bites for about 30 seconds, and then I wait for the timer. It has REALLY helped! I'm using it less and less, because it's becoming a habit now, but I still set a timer every time I eat so I can make sure it's taking me 15-30 minutes (depending on portion size) to eat my meals. If I'm eating too fast, I take a break, and start again slower.

I'm only 2.5 weeks out, but this has been working really well for me so far.

Good luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
