Band to sleeve...gaining weight

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I had my revision done aug 10. My first doctor's appointment after surgery (10 days later) I lost 14 pound. 5 weeks later (and solid foods), I've gained 5. I'm eating 1200 calories and exercising 5 times a week. How am I gaining?!?!?

Just feeling frustrated. Wondering if any other revisionist are having difficulties in month one.

Wow! How do you manage 1200 calories a day? I am 4 and 1/2 months post op and can't get in more than 800-900. Are you eating a lot of carbs?

How much can you eat? I could only eat 1/4 cup of food at that time. I can't do much more than that now. You may want to nix the Protein drinks and eat high protein meals.

i'm not losing good either. i her people say your getting in too many calories or you not eating enough. either way i can't lose. i had surgery 6/29 and have lost 15 lbs that's pre diet up to now and i work out with trainer 5 days a week and ride bike on weekend. i'm so discouraged too. i had to pay for my surgery here in the U.S. and i am so down and disgusted!!

I usually can eat half a sandwich. Or couple of eggs and a piece of toast. I can't eat a lot but I can drink a lot.

It's probably the carbs. I rarely eat sandwiches or toast. If I do it's one slice of low carb bread. No potatoes or rice. Sometimes a whole grain cracker.

I agree. I would cut the carbs. Protein first then if you have room veggies.

i'm a personal trainer and a nutritionist and this has just thrown me for a loop. It's not good if i get in too many calories and it's not good if i get in less either. being 9 weeks out i thought this would work like the band but it doesn't. I don't eat carbs unless i have 1 pc of bread a week. I'm totally depressed and disgusted too @@calitexan, especially working out 5 days a week with my personal trainer. i go to my surgeon next week on 23rd and i'm doing to ask him about this and what to do about this. i was a self pay in the US and i'll just be sick if i stay where i'm at after paying a whole lot of money to them

I am a strong believe in Protein first (which needs to come from as much food as possible), then i eat my veggies.

I had my revision done May 3. Lost 30lbs. while on pre-op and post-op diet, then, weight loss halted. All of July and August I was up 3 pounds, down three pounds. In July I added 1/2 hour light strength training, in addition to my 1 hour cardio and recently changed my cardio (mainly arch trainer) with intervals. I also, added 1 or 2 days of swimming and a weekend bike ride. Mid July I only weighed myself every 2 weeks, if that. I just got on the scale 3 days ago and am down 6 pounds. My point? Heck, I don't know, I was told so many things, but, what seemed to make the most sense to me was that my body was used to the same workout over and over. Once I changed this, I guess I shocked my body and the weight started dropping again. My portions are 1/2 cup. I follow the rules and I did increase my calorie intake to 1000 cals per day. I think for men 1200 is a good number to lose weight, but, for a female it think 1200 may be a little high, but, I'm no nutritionist. Anyhow, one thing that stuck out to me on a Facebook support group was someone telling that I would eventually find what works for me. I googled "why am I not losing weight with working out" and discovered the interval cardio training with an explanation why my body was holding on to my weight and how interval training would help. I also learned that I needed some carbs before my workout session and I try to get in some oatmeal before my workout and gives me more strength and endurance. I say "some" because it fills me quickly. Anyhow, I hope this it and I found what works. I'm not out of the wood yet, but, am feeling much more encouraged. We have to be patient and above all we can't give up! jake

My nutritionist said it doesn't matter if your calories are too low. Starvation is a myth. It sounds like you are doing well with Protein. Are you hungry? I find I only lose if I eat under 1000 per day even with exercise.

no, i'm not hungry. like this morning i got up and ate a boiled egg and i'll have to make myself eat lunch later which will prob be left over turkey meatloaf. if i snack, i snack on turkey Jerky that i got at krogers that i am addicted too. it's made by Krave. I've upped my workout to 4 days a week with trainer and the other days i ride my bike 3-5 miles and do sit ups, jumping jacks, jump rope and a few other things. the weight is not coming off like i thought it would at all. since i had my surgery 6/29 i've lost like 3 lbs. I don't know if me having the band for 8 years before is the reason and my body is use to the calorie intake or what. i'm just gonna go with it right now and see where i'm at in a year. hopefully at goal!!

oh, starvation is not a myth!! yes, your body will know when it's not getting enough calories and will start storing the fat away and you will not lose weight. she is totally wrong on that part. find another nutritionist!!!

It is a myth and an excuse. Show me a fat anorexic. Or someone who starved to death but is fat. They don't exist. Yes, your metabolism will slow down for a while but you will lose weight. And you certainly won't gain any.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
