I read somewhere that you cannot chew gum after surgery. I have always chewed gum to help curb my appetite and can't help but wonder if it would help during this liquid phase. Does anyone chew gum now after surgery?

I read you cannot chew gum after surgery

@@jreneewarnke

NUT told me no chewing gum

i was never a big gum person

the fact i was told i can't chew gum bothered me

she said it could get "stuck" :o

don't remember exact details

she said it was serious that i don't chew

might swallow by accident

big problems

that's the issue

you will learn here that all docs/nuts have different rules

mine said no gum

good luck

I think the biggest issue is swallowing gum because it cannot be digested. Because our stomachs are so small now it could potentially get stuck. Another issue is chewing gum causes your brain to send a signal to your stomach that food is coming so it starts producing stomach acid for digestion. Others tend to swallow a lot of air while chewing gum which can cause uncomfortableness.

I have only chewed gum a handful of times since surgery. I didn't have any issues but I'm a former gum swallower so I have to be very mindful of spitting it out. I actually don't chew it because I have issues with TMJ.

Mine also said no gum, I guess it can get stuck if you accidentally swallow it. I'm not a huge gum chewer, but I do have an occasional piece...and make sure I don't swallow it!

I can and do chew gum. My doc said if I swallow it that it can cause big problems so I just don't swallow it, lol. It helps me with the horrible breath.

Something about the sugar alcohol in chewing gum was an issue .... ? Not sure what or how though. Anyone have an answer?

Swallowing the gum is their biggest concern. If swallowed, my surgeon said he would have to go in and retrieve it.

I LOVE gum. Chew it from the time my day begins to the time I'm crawling in bed at night. This will be a huge adjustment for me. But.....I can't say I'm going to stop it completely. I don't swallow my gum, and can't remember the last time I swallowed it on 'accident'.

I chew gum every single day. I've never had a problem. Like everyone else said, the concern is swallowing it. I'm always careful and never have a problem

I chew gum every day. I keep some at home, in my coat pocket, at work and in my truck console. I reach for a piece when I'm feeling "snacky". Like others mentioned, I just don't swallow it.

My NUT said not to chew gum because of gas and it triggering hunger. I'm going to ask my surgeon though just to be sure!

My surgeon's office told me not to chew post op. I've never been a big gum person, so it hasn't bothered me. I'm not completely sure the reasoning, though.

I gave up chewing gum many, many years ago. That is one of those habits that I am so glad I don't have.

I never heard one word about NOT chewing it, so I do. Daily. I love it. I have never noticed being gassy from swallowing too much air with it. Then again, I also use straws, so...

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
