PLEASE tell me it gets better

I was banded Friday July 6th at SWLC, so I'm a little over 72 hours post-op. At first I had quite severe back pain, which I was expecting. What I wasn't prepared for is the horrible abdominal pain I'm having. Mostly around the port area. I'm also having a hard time getting fluids in. The fluids go down fine, I'm just experiencing a lot of nauseau.

Is this normal? I read so many posts where people seemed to bounce back to their normal selves almost right away.

I've had 2 c-sections and I was really not expecting this to be so painful. If you asked me tomorrow which operation I'd rather have I'd most definitely op for the section :)

Tell me why did you expect back pain??? It took me 1 week to feel somewhat human again. Can't say I had pain in the port area but the pain in my stomach was bad. All I could get down for 1 week was Water. I called the emergency number and was prescribed more pain meds. Let them know that you are feeling rough, can't hurt and them maybe they could offer some suggestions. Keep taking your gas-X.

Thanks Louise! I was expecting back pain because I knew there would be a lot of gas from having the surgery. I had really bad back/gas pains when I had both of sections.

I'm glad to hear that the pain will eventually subside!

Try moving around. Walk around the house, it helps with the gas. If you are concerned call your Doctor. I hear he is great.

I had the back pain too!! I was wondering what the )(&%^ is this about as I thought it would all be in my shoulder. It was not fun but it does go away. I would try just keeping your Water near you and sipping it as often as possible also try taking some gravol (liquid) for the nausea. Also as Donna said moving about helps too.

We are all so different when it comes to post op, well when it comes to most things. For me it just took time and patience, being good to myself. It sounds much easier once we are past the stage you are at right now. Soon you will feel better! honest you will!

Don't be so hard on yourself! You just had surgery and you need time to heal. As Leslie said - everyone is different. Take your meds, walk when you can and be good to yourself! It will get better!

Hi! I was banded the day before you by Dr. Yau. I was really rough for the first 3 days. Walking around the house, drinking Water and juices and Endura, and especially taking Gas-X were all of some help. I had had laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder) and bounced back really easily, and expected the same with this, but I am taking much longer and having more pain and bloating than that time.

But cheer up- each day gets easier and better- Just think, soon you will be on to full fluids!!!!

Thanks for the support everyone! I'm happy to say I feel soooooo much better now ;)

I bounced back so quickly from both my sections that I truly thought this was going to be easy. Guess it's the difference of hormones and taking somebody out as opposed to no hormones and putting something in :)

My back, my shoulder the lot hurt like hell! 4 weeks on, well I did my 50 min power walk this morning saw the sunshine and thought what a wonderful day! I feel awsome! You will feel better promise.

JetlagJane: You give me hope that I will get some energy back. I AM WIPED OUT!! but I used to powerwalk and actually did a half-marathon before I got so heavy my feet hurt too much to walk. Now, I can't wait to start walking again, if I ever get the energy back.

Banded July 5,2007 Dr Yau @TLBC

Just take it easy and baby steps. After surgery it takes us time to bounce back. I had the back and shoulder pain but the worst was the stomach cramps. Take the meds and don't be brave. When you feel you need a rest take the time to rest. You will get your energy back and then some! Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
