Surgery September 8th and Feeling Horrible

Recommended Posts

So I had my surgery this past Tuesday. All went well. But I had a really bad hiatal hernia that was way up in my chest cavity and my stomach was severely twisted in two places, add in a lot of scarring and deteriorated mesh from a prior repair, and yep, it was a mess. Yesterday morning I woke with severe pain and was rushed to the ER. They did a ct scan and found a collection of fluids at my esophagus due to all the swelling. They managed to get my pain under control and I was able to keep down sips of clear liquid. So they released me.

Now it hurts to take a sip of Water, and it really hurts to get in the liquid pain meds.

I'm getting up and walking as frequently as possible.

Please tell me this will quickly pass and be a distant memory.

If the pain continues I would call your surgeon or go into the ER. It shouldn't be that bad.

I will say that for me drinking the first few days was awful due to the swelling and spasms. I was re-admitted to the hospital for 3 days due to the fact that I was so dehydrated and it hurt so bad to drink. I didn't have a hernia so that could be adding to the discomfort.

I will tell you that it does get better. Once the swelling goes down and the spasms stop. If you are experiencing spasms have the doc give you some Levsin to help. It dissolves in your mouth so you don't have to swallow it. Also try using Ice on your tummy/chest to help reduce some of the swelling.

It will get better. You just have to suffer though it and be patient. I know that's not what you want to hear because it's not a quick fix, but it does get better.

Also - sip, sip, sip. Sip though the pain. It sucks but it sucks even more to get dehydrated.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
