Hey guys I'm one month pre op surgery date 10/28 and I am having the HARDEST time getting coke out of my diet. I know this is a huge no no after surgery and I don't want to have any problems. If any of you have any advice as to how to kick this habit that would be amazing! Thanks in advance.

Well the one thing I can say is carbonation after sleeve surgery is painful u must only sip very small sips and don't drink much at one time do not chug I swear u will be in agonizing pain and do not try to eat and drink soda did this once and promptly threw up and broke out in an entire body sweat was not a pleasant experience some lessons learned the hard way I do still drink a diet coke sometimes but I'd say it's one bottle like a 20 oz over a weeks time a little bit here or there be careful don't hurt yourself also I did not try this until 5 months post op when they say avoid soda ... Well they have a point lol just be careful

Set your goal: Stop drinking soda.

Set a time limit: By 9/19/2015

Identify the obstacles to your goal: Soda in the house, soda in the workplace, going thru the drive-thru at lunch for a soda, etc.

Identify how to deal with each obstacle: get rid of the soda in the house and don't let anyone bring any in; get rid of your stash at work; bring your lunch so you don't leave work and get a soda, etc.

Find an accountability buddy: someone who you will text or call at the end of every day to report your progress.

I just went cold turkey. It was VERY hard. My friends gave me a chip at one month and one year. Take it hour by hour. It's worth it.

Whatever you do, just make sure you stop before pre-op liquid diet. The combined headache you will get from stopping soda and all food/sugar at the same time will put you in bed for a day....

I changed to Lipton diet green tea. It's sweet and has no sugar, no calories and no carbonation. I think it has a little bit of caffeine too.

I had a 3 liter diet Dr. pepper habit before my surgery in June. Once I got approved I quit cold turkey. It was rough for the first 5 days. I recommend you do it before starting your preop diet though, because the liquid diet is hard enough without caffeine withdrawal!

Hello! I had a major coke addiction as well. One day I said thats it and started drinking lots of Water. I put it on a calendar whenever I would go a day without drinking it. The first two weeks are hard...headaches, crankiness, etc. I drank a lot of coffee during that time which really helped curb the craving.

It was very hard! Now I'm at a point where I can't even drink it because it's so sweet. My motivation is just setting my mind to prep for my surgery. I don't want to go through adjusting to the surgery plus having to give up coke all at the same time. Good luck!

I was a Coke Zero fanatic. Went cold turkey over a week ago as I'm on pre -op liver shrink diet.I do miss it, but not as much as I thought I would.

I quit soda over a year and a half ago and my surgery is in 2 weeks. What i did was a replaced coke with coffee. I never drink my coffee with sugar and just a little half and half. This kept me from having the caffeine withdrawal. I drank like 2 pots of coffee to start because I needed to replace the void of not drinking soda.

For a carbonated drink, we got a sodastream. I was able to carbonate Water and add poweraide zero drops to it. So it was like a flavored soda but no caffeine or sugar.

Then I slowly transitioned from the carbonation to just regular Water with the drops in it. This is all i drink now. I still had my coffee but cut back to 1 cup a day. I am not completely off the caffeine as i prepare for my surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
