Worried about post-op depression

Recommended Posts

I've been on meds for depression since I was 21. I'm now 56, and have suffered with several bouts of major depression episodes. I'm stable on my psych meds now, and have been stable for about two years. I'm worried this will affect the effectiveness of the meds or that the surgery will cause a major depression episode. I've been told exercise is very effective after surgery and will help with depression. I just hope I remain stable. I plan to discuss with my psych before surgery, just wondering about some of your experiences.

I have been on Wellbutrin since having a stroke in 2010 and suffering somewhat from post-stroke depression and anxiety. My sleeve has not made it any worse, and I am currently weaning off of it for the third time. Well, I hope the third time is the charm, because I would like to be off all of my meds at some point.

I have had major depression and have been on Effexor and Valproic acid for the last 14 years.

I had gastric bypass 3.5 weeks ago and I am doing fine.

I just continued with my meds, Effexor is a capsule so I open it and put it in a spoonful of yogurt or apple sauce.

The Valproic acid comes in a liquid form.

I discussed the surgery with my psy and she did not see any problem, on the contrary, looking after my health is very positive.

Good luck on your surgery, you will be fine and happy when you start loosing.

Thanks all. I'm glad I know I can come here for support if I do start feeling down after my surgery.

I actually went through a severe case of depression about 4 years ago, and since that time have done well on prozac, wellbutrin and a small dose of abilify.

I'm just praying the bypass doesn't interfere with these meds continuing to work for me.

Me too! On Wellbutrin and Lexapro. Had a major episode of depression three years ago and was in psych hospital for 11 days. Very stable now. My psychiatrist knows I'm having this surgery and he is very knowledgable about. He does psych evals for WLS from time to time and was encouraging.

Dar200 I am encouraged and hopeful that exercise and maintaining our meds will keep us stable.

I've taken 80mg of prozac for many years.. I have had no problems after RNY. I thought I would have a problem with the capsule and that was ok too. Rny 6/25/15. Also they required clearance from my psychiatrist

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
