5 weeks post opp still can't tolerate food.

Recommended Posts

I am 5 weeks out and still have a hard time with soft or puree food staying down. I'm drinking my Protein and Water but sometimes my protein will come up too. Has anyone had this issue.

Yes!! No matter what I ate it came back up. Water was literally the only thing I could consume. Turns out the bottom part of my stomach formed crazy amount of scar tissue. The dr had to open the stomach up and put botox in. I woke up and had zero problems since.

Had the same issue here and it was also a stricture so small that nothing would get thru. I didn't figure it out until 3 months post-op when I vomited everything (food, liquids, Vitamins, etc) for 4 days straight. Even a visit to ER and CT scan didn't find it. They finally did an EGD and that's how they found it. They dilated with a balloon twice (about a week apart) and I am feeling so much better and almost feel like I am eating too much now! I'm sure I am not. It is just so much more than I was. All to say, please call your Dr and press them for an EGD to check for stricture

The doctor said that it is just taking longer than most. But I sent an email pressing my concerns for this and want to make sure I'm ok. Because if no food is staying down that means I'm not getting any nutrients and I don't want to have issues with that. I'm feeling weak now and drain.

I am so sorry. I completely understand! Do not get dehydrated. Maybe try sticking with just liquid for a day or two and see how it goes? Use a medicine cup if you have to sipping only 1/2 of it (i.e. 1/2 ounce) and sit and sip every 5 minutes. If you can do that for an hour or so a few times a day. If you get where you are not holding anything down, go to the ER. You can tell them you think you have a stricture and maybe they will do an EGD. When I went they just did CT scan which showed no stricture (WRONG!). I knew there was something wrong. I felt so justified when they found the stricture. I said "SEE?! I knew there was something!"

I had a lot of problems eating the first 6-8 weeks. My doc monitored the situation but we waited it out and slowly it got better. As I went from one eating stage to the next, if I had problems I would just go back to the previous stage for a couple of days and keep trying to move on.

Eventually, it got better and it is now a distant memory!

Wishing you the best on this journey!

I'm starting to keep small amounts of food down now everyone. But it's only 2 ounces of food. If I eat the slightest amount over 2 ounces I start to throw up. So I guess 2 ounces is it for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
