ebonymc 52 Posted September 12, 2015 Hello! I am so afraid to have the VSG done, but heart disease run deeply in my family. My parents died from heart disease young and so did half of my siblings. I am now 60 years young (so I feel) and wonder if I should just leave it all alone and live life as is. I have less than 80 lbs to lose but do have all comorbids. If I go through with it, I will have to do a 3 month nutritional diet and exercise plan for insurance purposes. I'm collecting all opinions before my final decision. Thx! barbb3 115 Posted September 12, 2015 At 60 you have a lot of living to do! This surgery will give you a better quality of life - that is why I did it. No regrets.
Babbs 14,681 Posted September 12, 2015 My mom died from congestive heart failure after a heart attack a couple years prior at 69. My dad died from a heart attack at 56. Even though I only had 85 pounds to lose, at 47 years old I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and put on medication for the first time in my life. That was all I needed to make the decision. The odds of me dying an early death due to heart problems outweighed the 1% chance of complications from the surgery. Now at 148 pounds, my blood pressure is perfect and I now have a better chance of living longer than both of my parents did. Totally worth it.
