Heart Disease Run In The Family

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am so afraid to have the VSG done, but heart disease run deeply in my family. My parents died from heart disease young and so did half of my siblings. I am now 60 years young (so I feel) and wonder if I should just leave it all alone and live life as is. I have less than 80 lbs to lose but do have all comorbids. If I go through with it, I will have to do a 3 month nutritional diet and exercise plan for insurance purposes. I'm collecting all opinions before my final decision. Thx!

At 60 you have a lot of living to do! This surgery will give you a better quality of life - that is why I did it. No regrets.

My mom died from congestive heart failure after a heart attack a couple years prior at 69. My dad died from a heart attack at 56. Even though I only had 85 pounds to lose, at 47 years old I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and put on medication for the first time in my life. That was all I needed to make the decision. The odds of me dying an early death due to heart problems outweighed the 1% chance of complications from the surgery. Now at 148 pounds, my blood pressure is perfect and I now have a better chance of living longer than both of my parents did. Totally worth it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
