How much water can you drink?

Recommended Posts

I am a month out and I am able to drink Water 4 or 6 ounces in a few long sips then will not for another hour or so. I do not feel pain but am I drinking to fast and can it hurt me?

I'm 6 weeks out and I drink 90oz a day. But I can't drink plain Water at all, I just can't stomach it. I have to use flavor drops and 30-60oz of that is Unsweetened Iced Passion Tea from Starbucks. It's an herbal tea (decaf, no sugar, no cals) so I count it towards my Water intake.

From what I've read there's a valve at the bottom of your stomach and when you're drinking it stays open and the liquid just passes right through. So I don't think you can drink too much and hurt yourself. If you don't feel uncomfortable you're probably fine.

Be careful about drinking faster than your stomach can empty... it can be quite painful (and dangerous). I would encourage you to take no more than a couple ounces at a time and be in the habit of sipping whenever you're not close to meal time.

Water goes through much faster than food, but I was told to keep it to about 3-4 oz spread out over 15 minutes. That seems to be about how much my stomach could hold with liquids, and just about the rate it emptied.... so I can easily sip/drink a bottle of Water in an hour, and have been able to since about 1 week pre-op.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
