Desire, Devotion, and Depression

Recommended Posts

So I suppose I'm writing this because no one around me seems to understand the cluster of emotions I'm feeling and I'm starting to wonder if I'm strong enough for this. I have my surgery date set for Oct 1. I'm excited don't get me wrong but I'm terrified. I've been pushing for this for months! I'm in therapy for my depression and anxiety. I'm on meds and I've gotten the okay from my therapist ( still waiting on her to write my surgeon the letter) but its pretty much all a go assuming my blood work and ekg turn out fine. But now... I'm having all these negative thoughts about what if I can't handle the diet or what if the depression get worse because of the rapid weightloss. I have talked to some people who've had the procedure done and not one of them regrets it. I haven't been dieting leading up to the surgery... but I am trying to walk more and get my sleep schedule in line. I'm wondering if anyone else is having similar issues with the fear of failure or maybe not being prepared... Is this normal?

I have no regrets. I can tell you that I have had a lot of anxiety. I made the decision to move to a new state, new job, just two months after surgery, this definitely made it worse. However, I feel happier than I ever have, looking forward to my future with positivity and a new compassion for myself. You sound like you are doing everything you should to prepare. I feel like no matter what I did, not until I had the surgery did anything really stick. Worth every bit.

I think it is very common for people to have anxiety just before weight loss surgery.

Substitute any life changing event in place of weight surgery and I think you'd probably be feeling the same way right now. We all would.

It's easy to remain static, in the same place, but it takes guts to take a risk, especially one that will effect the rest of your life.

Doing nothing is actually the "easy way out" in my opinion. Making the change is what shows you that you are a lot stronger than you ever gave yourself credit for.

You're not alone. Ice struggled for months and posted all my fears frustration and anger. You ARE normal. It IS a process. Keep coming to the forums for help from those who know what you are going through and how your likely feeling.

Xoxo

Another thing to consider: If your therapist has given the OK for the surgery, then she likely feels that you have a reasonable understanding of what you are getting yourself into, and that you will be likely to be able to be successful with the procedure. It will take effort on your part, but it is totally something you can do.

Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and concerned is totally normal. Just prior to my surgery, I felt excited, elated, scared, and anxious all at the same time. Totally normal.

For me, it was thinking about the alternative that made me even more anxious and afraid. Forever being obese and unable to enjoy life, and forever probably not being very much longer.

I have been having lots of emotions the past few days. My surgery is the 28th and I'm just ready to get it over with. One min I am excited, then scared and the next doubting myself if I can do it. My nurse said that was totally normal. Just keep reaching out to people that can offer you support and encouragement! Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
