My doctor said NO to surgery!

Recommended Posts

I also had my primary doctor refuse to give clearance. He said it was way to much paper work to go through and Medicare is very hard to get approval from.

I went to a bariactric surgeon for my first appointment, he recommended me to a primary care dr, who after 2 visits agreed I would be a good candidate for the sleeve. I saw this doctor for 6 months with weigh ins and nutritional information.

So I agree you look for a Bariatric dr, they will help you.

Good Luck

It sounds like your PCP has a personal bias against WLS. It may be time to reevaluate your PCP choice. Having WLS is a personal decision. If you want to have it, and your body is healthy enough, do it! You have to do what's best for you, not your doctor! I didn't have to get approval from my PCP, so have no idea how to get around that issue. However, I'd suggest asking your bariactric center for guidance. Good luck on your journey!

If WLS is something you REALLY feel you need to take control of your life, then don't let anyone stand in your way.

When I made up my mind to go for it, no one was going to talk me out of it.

I knew from 47 years of experience that I needed the extra help WLS offered.

I had been overweight since childhood and could never control my weight gain.

If my primary physician had discouraged me from WLS, I would have found another.

My first call was to my insurance company to get a list of approved WLS doctors.

I never went to a general practitioner, went straight to the WLS doctor and started the process.

Victoza has been prescribed for diabetes for some time. Some people found it reduced their appetite and they lost weight. Thus you now have doctors prescribing it as an appetite suppressant.

I took Victoza for my type 2 diabetes for a couple years. Weight loss? Meh... the only loss of appetite was from the nausea it gives some people. The couple pounds I lost didn't make a dent in my obesity.

I had sleeve surgery last December and am down 85 lbs and off ALL diabetes meds. BEST thing I ever did!!! My PCP, an athlete herself, was not a fan of WLS. She was an excellent doctor and I had enormous respect for her. She gave me clearance for the surgery but also said "I don't know why anyone would remove 85% of their stomach to lose weight when all you really need to do is eat better." I knew this was something she could never really understand.

I now have a different PCP who has actually had the sleeve surgery himself and HE understands. ????

Try the Victoza if you want. But I would have a Plan B and if that includes changing PCP, I would consider it.

Find a different doctor. I have lost 50 pounds since June 3rd and I only needed to lose 100 as well. I had gastric bypass and would do it all over again in a heartbeat. My only regret is not doing it sooner!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
