Anybody using the unflavored protein powder?

Recommended Posts

I tried the Unjury unflavored in Water with crystal light - yuck! But I hear it is good in something more savory, like Soup, chili, etc. where you would be less likely to notice its slight flavor. Haven't tried that yet.

Unflavored doesn't mean no flavored. Unflaovred means the whey isolate doesn't have any added flavorings. Depending on what you mix it with there may be a slight change in taste. I use Isopure unflavored. One of my favorite things to mix it with is adding it to Soup or vegetable broth. It's not quite the same taste/texture as a creamy soup. The taste is mild but not milky. If I add spices it's barely discernible. I've mixed it with juices and while it wasn't unpleasant, I didn't particularly care for it. You might also want to look at Protein drink or waters. Isopure made ready to drink ones that are pretty good. Syntrax nectar makes powders that can be mixed with Water but are milky. Proasis makes Protein Shots. Even Special K makes Protein waters. The protein count is not as high, but if you are looking to supplement they may work.

There are literally hundreds of protein powders and shakes out there. Premiere Protein is really popular, I find it disgusting. I love Isopure unflavored and their ready to drink teas. A lot of people are turned off by the smell. You have to try them and see if they suit your taste buds. If you buy from a brick and mortar store like GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods or even Target you can return any unused portion as long as you have your receipt. My advice would be to buy a few and try them.

Be wary that some protein powders are not designed to be mixed with hot things. When mixing whether hot or cold I find it helpful to mix the scoop with a small amount of liquid at first. Perhaps 1 tsp. Once it's completely dissolved then add the rest of your liquid.

I too also use Isopure unflavored whey Protein. I tend to use that when I am going with fruit smoothies where I use juice instead of soy milk, and frozen fruits. It gives a bit of volume to the smoothie that I normally would get with the milk. I prefer it over the flavored stuff cause sometimes the flavoring in those whey protein mixes can be too much for me taste wise. I have a friend that uses and swears by the Unjury stuff, but I can't really find that locally like I did the ISOPure.

I think I paid around $60-$70 for a 3lbs container of the unflavored stuff. Well worth the money to me in my book.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
