kaysunshine 47 Posted September 11, 2015 I forgot to ask this question too. I should write my questions down B4 I see the doctor. BuT:blink: At what point can you start swallowing perscription pills again. Example: BP pills, prevacid, Nexium whole. Thanks in advance!
CanyonBaby 1,852 Posted September 11, 2015 I was not allowed to take whole pills, or anything that wasn't crushed, until I was out 8 weeks. Your staple line needs to heal, and having things adhere to it aren't the best for it. Ask your NUT or surgeon for their advice. Good luck to you!
_Kate_ 2,224 Posted September 11, 2015 I started with just BP tablets and Vitamin D tablets (which are tiny) at week 7. I am still on either chewable or liquids for the rest of the medication for the next few weeks. Some people here have been told 7 days. As with everything within Bariatric surgery, go with what your team say or how you feel yourself. For example, f they say 7 days and you aren't comfortable with that stick to other ways until you feel confident yourself.
kaysunshine 47 Posted September 11, 2015 I'll keep crushing pills for now. That's the safest way at this point.
BigViffer 3,544 Posted September 11, 2015 This is interesting to me. The day I went home from the hospital I was giving a prescription for pills. The only restriction was that I could only take one pill at a time. I thought that was funny until I had to take a pill. I've taken meds for so long, I could take a handful without so much as a sip of Water. I had a hard time the first few weeks, but I got used to it. I don't remember exactly when things changed, but I do know that I take 4 pills now at a time with just a sip of Water.< /p> Also, be aware that some medications are not supposed to be crushed. Slow release pills being a good example of one. Check with your pharmacist and your surgeon of course.
Christine99 69 Posted September 11, 2015 I was told not to swallow anything larger than a pill...all of my Vitamins are chewables and meltaways. Thankfully I have not need any Rx since surgery
roundisashape 712 Posted September 11, 2015 I was taking them the morning after surgery in the hospital - some of the pain meds were tablets
magicalwoman 190 Posted September 11, 2015 I am two days post op and my pain meds are liquid. My nausea meds are melt away under my tongue. My heartburn med is a capsule and has been the most difficult. My biggest challenge is 64 ounces of liquids a day.
desertgirl_74 114 Posted September 11, 2015 I guess it depends on your surgeon. I was only given pills when I left the hospital...vitamins and nexium. He told me there was no need to crush anything.
Gingerish 113 Posted September 11, 2015 I was taking normal pills as soon as I was released. I guess each doctor is different. I just wait a while between pills and if it's a big one (like my multi-vit) I break it in half so it goes down easier.
Trinn 139 Posted September 11, 2015 I was given pills, but also instructions on opening up the capsule one and sprinkling the contents on a small spoonful of unsweetened apple sauce. *grin* But other than that, not allowed to have swallowable Vitamin pills. Had liquid Vicodin for pain at home, too.

Like a pipe dream for me at this time. I wasn't a big Water drinker B4 surgery. But I'm working on it.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted September 11, 2015 Any large pills such as my multi had to be crushed or chewables until I was 6 weeks. Smaller pills like my omprazole I was allowed to swallow. According to my nutritionist the concern was that so soon after surgery the body might not be able to break down such large pills to properly absorb the nutrients. I would check with your program as to what their guidelines are.

Like a pipe dream for me at this time. I wasn't a big Water drinker B4 surgery. But I'm working on it. I keep hearing that it gets easier, but I am not there yet either. I average 50-ish oz of water. There are days when I am hot from working outside and I blow it out no problem. but sitting in the office all day makes it difficult. My surgeon said as long as you are peeing relatively clear you are physically OK. But always shoot for the 64 oz.
purz59 57 Posted September 11, 2015 My hubby came home with regular pain pills to take along with his nexium and wellbutrin. He never crushed anything. I hope I will be able to swallow pills after mine.
