I forgot to ask this question too. I should write my questions down B4 I see the doctor. BuT:blink:

At what point can you start swallowing perscription pills again. Example: BP pills, prevacid, Nexium whole.

Thanks in advance!

I was not allowed to take whole pills, or anything that wasn't crushed, until I was out 8 weeks. Your staple line needs to heal, and having things adhere to it aren't the best for it. Ask your NUT or surgeon for their advice. Good luck to you!

I started with just BP tablets and Vitamin D tablets (which are tiny) at week 7. I am still on either chewable or liquids for the rest of the medication for the next few weeks. Some people here have been told 7 days. As with everything within Bariatric surgery, go with what your team say or how you feel yourself. For example, f they say 7 days and you aren't comfortable with that stick to other ways until you feel confident yourself.

This is interesting to me. The day I went home from the hospital I was giving a prescription for pills. The only restriction was that I could only take one pill at a time. I thought that was funny until I had to take a pill. I've taken meds for so long, I could take a handful without so much as a sip of Water. I had a hard time the first few weeks, but I got used to it. I don't remember exactly when things changed, but I do know that I take 4 pills now at a time with just a sip of Water.< /p>

Also, be aware that some medications are not supposed to be crushed. Slow release pills being a good example of one. Check with your pharmacist and your surgeon of course.

I was told not to swallow anything larger than a pill...all of my Vitamins are chewables and meltaways.

Thankfully I have not need any Rx since surgery

I was taking them the morning after surgery in the hospital - some of the pain meds were tablets

I am two days post op and my pain meds are liquid. My nausea meds are melt away under my tongue. My heartburn med is a capsule and has been the most difficult.

My biggest challenge is 64 ounces of liquids a day.

I was taking normal pills as soon as I was released. I guess each doctor is different. I just wait a while between pills and if it's a big one (like my multi-vit) I break it in half so it goes down easier.

I was given pills, but also instructions on opening up the capsule one and sprinkling the contents on a small spoonful of unsweetened apple sauce. *grin* But other than that, not allowed to have swallowable Vitamin pills. Had liquid Vicodin for pain at home, too.

Let's not even talk about the 64oz of Water. That eludes me too. Like a pipe dream for me at this time.

I wasn't a big Water drinker B4 surgery. But I'm working on it. -_-:angry::blink:

Any large pills such as my multi had to be crushed or chewables until I was 6 weeks. Smaller pills like my omprazole I was allowed to swallow. According to my nutritionist the concern was that so soon after surgery the body might not be able to break down such large pills to properly absorb the nutrients.

I would check with your program as to what their guidelines are.

I keep hearing that it gets easier, but I am not there yet either. I average 50-ish oz of water. There are days when I am hot from working outside and I blow it out no problem. but sitting in the office all day makes it difficult. My surgeon said as long as you are peeing relatively clear you are physically OK. But always shoot for the 64 oz.

My hubby came home with regular pain pills to take along with his nexium and wellbutrin. He never crushed anything. I hope I will be able to swallow pills after mine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
