6 Days Post Op - Calories

Recommended Posts

Hi, 6 days post-op'er. Trying to get those 3 meals a day in. But, barely hitting 100 calories a day, and up to about 32 oz of Water daily. Still bloated and achy from surgery. How many calories are too little? Adding Protein powder where I can, but ingesting so little can't imagine I'm getting all I need. scale barely moving. Only 5 pounds down from surgery - 9 lbs if I include the water weight gained from IV.

Initially I couldn't consume many calories. focus on getting as much Protein in and fluids as you can. It is difficult at first as your new tummy is swollen. Every day will get better. Keep something in hand at all times, be it Water or a Protein Drink. Good luck! You will get there.

What is your surgeon's plan? Mine was 45 ounces of clear fruit juice (apple, white grape, cranberry) diluted with 45 ounces of Water, per day (500-900 calories depending on the juice). In addition, I could have broth, sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello.

That was the first week. They told me Protein and calories are secondary in importance for several weeks, as long as you're getting in your fluids. After all, we've stored up a lot of energy as it is.

They actually gave me a list that included yogurt, tuna fish, cottage cheese. I'm on day 9 now and tolerating slightly more. But mostly Soups and yogurt.

How are you doing? I'm feeling the same way you did at 6 days post op and hoping it gets better:)

I was sleeved on the 28th and I've been having the same issues I have been getting under 200 calories each day on average and about 32 ounces of Water. Overall I'm feeling pretty good physically with the exception of the one incision toward the right side, that ones been very painful.

I had my sleeve done on 9/30/15 and I was told to just worry about my Fluid intake. I'm supposed to get in 64oz a day but I'm lucky if I can get in 32oz!! I never thought drinking liquids would be so hard! I am eating some SF Popsicles & a few bites of SF Jello but it's just hard.

This early out I wasn't concerned with "meals". I was sipping all day. My primary goal was to get in all of my Protein and Fluid.

My surgeon was adamant that getting in enough Protein was critical for healing. With one exception, I was able to get in my 100 grams of protein every day from the second day after surgery. Fortunately, when on clear and full liquids, you naturally have a boost toward your Fluid goal.

Was it easy? No. But I set a goal, and just didn't go to bed each night until I had reached my goal.

Just keep sipping, it does get easier.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
