Worried about my protein intake

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone....This Friday will make 3 weeks post for me and I'm almost positive I'm not reaching or anywhere near my goal for Protein intake. My pallet is strange so protein shakes/powders are a no go for me. I can't stand the taste of any of them! What's a girl to do? My diet as of now still consists of full liquids/ clears I tried to advance but my tummy is not up for that yet. It takes me like two while days to drink 1 bottle of water....is anyone else having these issues? I feel I dunno I guess "behind"..

You have got to get in your Protein.

Keep trying different Protein drinks, but ultimately, even if you don't love the taste you may just have to drink them anyway.

Have you talked to your NUT?

My appt to see my NUT is not till the 24th....hopefully she'll have some good suggestions

I just hit 3 weeks on Tuesday of this week an am eating soft foods. I also am not a fan of the sweet drinks and have done well with mushy Soups (bean Soup that is mashed) and cottage cheese and canned tuna (about 2 spoons of each mixed) I know it sounds gross but so much better than the sweet stuff! I have lost 15 lbs, but have hit one of those stalls this week.

The importance of your Protein is more than weight loss right now its so your body can heal, I was struggling with a few protein brands too and Was struggling to get the minimum 60g my dr wanted, I actually switched to the premade Premier Protein shakes @ costco (choc, vanilla & strawberries & cream) the best thing is they are 30g so I just needed to drink two a day. I also suggest you call your dr office & let them know your struggle with protein so they can get you on track, I wouldn't wait & they wouldn't want you too either Hope this helps, & Best wishes too! ????

I hate all Protein Drinks too, except premier - the chocolate is the best! I tried an "Oh Yeah" brand today... nope - ugh. Try premier if you haven't, and/or Unjury chicken Soup. Or eat lots of Greek yogurt. Good luck!

OK. Go and get some unflavored Protein powder, mix it with Water, add the water-enhancer drops you can get at most grocery stores, and drink it!!! You can change up the flavors as you like, mix them together, just get it in!!! You need at least 60g per day, and spread it out throughout the day. You can find unflavored Protein Powder online, and at nutrition stores. I also mix in my powdered Calcium and benefiber to get in all my extras I need daily. Good luck to you!

Get non flavored Protein Powder and add to Soups, yogurt, or any other thing you are eating/drinking. I just did not add to yo plain Water. I found premier chocolate shakes the best

So what are you drinking? Are you tracking your protein at all?

High protein liquids:

1. Kefir or yogurt drinks

2. Boil a chicken breast. Puree it, thin it down with chicken broth

3. Black Beans, lentil or split peas pureed & strained. Again thin down as needed.

4. Instead of milk based Protein shakes, try Protein Drinks. Try brands such as Proasis, Isopure or even Special K Vitamin waters.

You need protein to heal, protein to lose and protein to maintain your hair/skin & nails. You also need to keep your fluids up to prevent dehydration. If you are still having trouble, you should wait until the 24th. Call your nutritionist and speak with them about your concerns. In the meantime, keep working on getting in more protein, even if you have to literally sip all day.

I'm on day 6 and still on liquids only (3 more weeks to go) and Premier Protein is the best, but after even this short time I'm already so sick of them. I went through Bariatricadvantage.com and purchased nectar brand Protein powder and love it!!! I got peach (fuzzy navel), caribbean cooler (pineapple, coconut & banana) and flavorless - to add to Soups and broths. I've been so frustrated that broth has only appx 2 grams of protein so adding the flavorless protein is a life saver!!! You've got to get your protein and nutrients in!!! Good luck!

Where I live ready made Protein drinks are not really available (especially low carb ones) - I guess Poland is not a market for them yet. I just got a couple of Protein powders. To be honest, I tried to put a brave face on, but after experimenting with different proportions and tastes I stopped denying it - I really hate them all. :)

Still, I know I need to put protein in, so I don't really care that much about the taste anymore. My approach is to see the Protein shake as a medicine, not as food - I just need to get it down. I mix it with a little bit of Water and milk, plug my nose and sip.

Of course it's better if you can find something that you like. :) This is a little extreme I guess.. My point is focus on the benefits of having protein packed drink rather than on the taste.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
