sleevingbeauty17 28 Posted September 10, 2015 So in my research, i found that many people actually have to remind themselves to eat after surgery. Is this true? And if so, how soon does this take effect? What i read was that in the part of the stomach that is removed is a gland that gives off a hormone that signals to your brain that your stomach is empty. Is this accurate?
Folly 308 Posted September 10, 2015 (edited) Hunger feels different for me than before WLS. It's extremely uncomfortable and becomes nauseating if I don't do something about fairly quickly. The good news is that I don't feel it very often through the day. Edited September 10, 2015 by Folly
slvarltx 332 Posted September 10, 2015 For the first 3-4 weeks after surgery, I felt hunger as normally would and then by week 8 it had mostly gone away. Hunger is now more like "I feel weak, I should eat something"
Babbs 14,681 Posted September 10, 2015 When I could actually tell the difference between head hunger and real hunger, I found that I'm actually ever rarely "really" hungry. But when I am, boy am I!
rnsamantha 352 Posted September 10, 2015 I still get hungry occasionally. When it happens I am more likely to eat too fast/too much and end up with a stomachache or vomiting. I eat my 3 meals/day and 1-2 Snacks. A cheese string goes a long way to curb any hunger for me!
AngelaWilliamsMD 290 Posted September 10, 2015 My significant other has to "strongly remind" me to eat sometimes. Other times I feel deathly hungry but can only eat small portions. Crazy sleeve
toler48 120 Posted September 10, 2015 @@sleevingbeauty17 Yes, the portion of your stomach that releases the hunger hormone, grehlin (sp), is in the portion of the stomach removed during surgery.
OutsideMatchInside 10,166 Posted September 10, 2015 I am 8 weeks. I have never been physically hungry. I did have a lot of head hunger the first 2-3 weeks post-op. My head hunger does not connect to my stomach, so it is much easier to ignore and let pass. Now my head hunger is pretty much over. I don't crave bad things. amymina 4 Posted September 10, 2015 From what I have heard that is true, also u have to remind urself to drink something. Be very careful to get the required amnt of fluids in, as I saw someone that didn't and it caused great health problems
KarenLoh 128 Posted September 10, 2015 I am 31 days out and I have hunger hunger (not head hunger). It's not quite as strong as it was before the surgery and I can wait the hour or two until my next meal but it is still there and still annoying. I carry around Quest Bars and will eat half of one if it's an hour until lunch or dinner and my stomach is growling. I'm hopeful that this will decrease in time as I start eating more. And I must admit that my hunger pre-surgery was out of control and ridiculous for some reason I don't understand so at least it's better.
