If you are stuck...

Recommended Posts

Is it better for your band and esophagus to drink something and get it right up or wait until your body brings it up.

I'm talking times when you have done all the other tricks to try to get it down and thy have failed. I know not getting stuck is healthier but if it happens should I get the food out of the esophagus quickly or does it not matter?

I always try pineapple juice. I avoid vomiting at all costs because of fears of band slips

If you are truly stuck, then anything you drink will have no where to go but back up....and it's not vomiting, it's regurgitation....big difference.

If you don't do something, then your saliva has no where to go...sliming....and eventually, just like drinking something, it too will come up...just takes longer to happen.

So, when I (used to) get stuck, I would go into the bathroom, and take small sips of Water...it will come up. May take once or twice, but it will clear it out.

Done it at restaurants many times.

Sliming is the body's way of accomplishing the same thing....drinking something will just speed up the process.

I found that if I can drink anything with no problem, then I'm not that bad.

I don't get stuck too often but when I do, I feel it's better to get it out. That stuck pressure on the stoma can't be good and makes me feel like it's stretching my esophagus. I don't know if that's true or not, but it's my gut feeling and so I prefer to relieve the pressure by getting it up and out.

WheI get a stuck I can't usually get anything down. Last Saturday I wanted to reach in and take the damn thing out just to get something unstuck. It was probably the worst stuck I have had in 2.5 years of having this band. Wish I had the sleeve or bypass but alas too late.

As soon as I feel stuck I stop drinking and swallowing then I start spitting I usually have a cup or bottle and spit

Sometimes it takes 20 minutes. Sometimes I'm spitting for 2 hours...I have learned the hard way...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
