When I look in the mirror

Recommended Posts

Why is it that when I look in the mirror I dont see a difference. In my clothes I can see/feel the difference... The scale numbers are clearly lower... And ppl around me are constantly complimenting me on the weight loss. However, when I look in the mirror I dont see any difference. Is that wierd?? I started out at 223lbs and 12 weeks later Im at 162lbs but I swear when I look in the mirror Im still the fat girl who weighs 223lbs. Am I always gonna see her??

Wow—your weight loss experience is more dramatic than mine, although I share your issue. I started the pre-surgical diet at 264 and just over three months later am now at that much awaited 199 "onederland." And though I do see a difference, in my head I feel just as fat as ever. It's incredibly strange. I have thought that perhaps it's because I haven't lost enough yet to truly feel thinner. But the experience you describe—and the experiences I read from other people—lead me to believe this is a real mental hurdle we must face. I will be interested to read others' thoughts on this issue. But best to you on your amazing weight loss journey.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder is real. Try looking at photos. This was what helped a couple people I know immensely. For some reason the photos look as they should. The interpretation of the mirror image is the distortion. This may be an issue to work out in therapy with someone well versed in eating disorders.

I would definitely recommend taking pictures and doing a side by side of a photo that you hate (we all have some) from before and you now. I take them once per month, full body shots of front, back and side and look at my previous months photos. Guaranteed to make you feel better. It will truly show you your progress.

Another idea is take yourself shopping. Doesn't have to be expensive or buy much but when you are trying things on in a smaller size and it is fitting, it will boost your confidence. Recognize how far you have gotten and be proud of that. Work it!

I went to the gym today and it really is the first time I looked at myself in a full l length mirror and SAW me as I am now. I suppose it matters that it happened at the gym. I was wearing incredibly baggy clothes but I noticed my hips and shoulders line up correctly - shoulders and hips are the same width and are wider than my torso. It's weird to keep discovering yourself - or at least it is for me. My sister told me a few days ago I have to stop seeing myself as someone huge because I've actually lost more than I currently weigh... If I dwell on it too much it gets a little surreal.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
