I look more for the TYPE of Calcium in a supplement now. I used to chew Tums or Viactiv which are calcium carbonate. But recent research is showing that calcium carbonate is the least bioavailable form of calcium. Granted as long as you are taking a calcium supplement, I think that's a good thing, but I want to take the form that will be best utilized by my body.

Actually that would be calcium formate, but you can't really get many supplements in calcium formate, it's not widely available yet. calcium citrate is the most bioavailable form out there that is easy to get your hands on.

I also have to weigh out the availability and cost of supplements as well as how I can take them and how they taste. I want a chewable, good-tasting supplement in a calcium citrate, that's how I landed on Citracal. The chews are available in chocolate Fudge, Lemon Cream, and Caramel. They are about $8 at Wallyworld (Walmart) for a box of 30, a little pricey, but not bad. They are, however, 35 calories per chew. But 35 calories for what seems like a little chocolate treat is not bad in my book.

I take OS CAL chewable, light lemon chiffon tablets. They have zero calories and are reasonably priced. Because they aren't those big, honkin' pills I used to take, I find I take them regularly. They taste good too. Even before surgery, I HATED swallowing those big pills.< /p>

I have to tell you though...as happy as I am with mine, the chewies sound good too. Since I'm at Wal Mart ALL the time, I might pick up a pack of those to take a couple times a week instead of the OS CAL.

I was recently told that adding Calcium can help speed weightloss? Is this true?

Otherwise, what are the advantages of me taking MORE than my multi and having some milk?

Calcium citrate is particularly good for women and is essential to the health of their bones especially for women over 40. At least that is what my nutritionist says.

I take Citracal- chocolate chewies--Pretty good and a nice treat to end the day.

I had been taking Caltrate for several years. The dietician said that she recommends calcium citrate because it much less constipating than the Calcium carbonate. I couldn't find chewable calcium citrate in the stores so I ordered some from Bariatric Advantage.

It turns out that these are "lozenges" rather than chewables. You must let them dissolve slowly in your mouth (15-20 minutes) and their texture is very gritty, more like calcium concrete. As soon as I go through the 180 tablets (sigh) I'll be shopping for an alternative.

Citracal is calcium citrate and is available in chewables. You can get them in chocolate, caramel and lemon, I believe. I find them in chocolate at Walmart for around $9 for a box. A little more expensive than other calciums, but it is a citrate and yummy and chewable. That's what's important to me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
