Calories and being discouraged

Recommended Posts

Hey wonderful people!

I just got back from the doctor's office, where I have been getting weighed since surgery almost exactly three weeks ago so I could have an accurate reading. I've lost 15 pounds since the day of surgery, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't kind of sad and frustrated. I know that this is a perfectly normal amount to have lost in three weeks, and that it's ridiculous to worry or be bothered that it isn't more. However, that doesn't really make me feel better about it. Sigh.

Anyway, the main question I have for you guys is about calories. I've read that my focus is Protein, Water, and taking my Vitamins and supplements. But I'm wondering if I'm getting in more or less or the normal amount of calories, and I would really like to hear your guys' experience with this. How many calories were you getting in daily around 3 weeks to a month?

I've attached a screenshot of today's food plan from myfitnesspal.com (I love this website, and would highly recommend it!). The "breakfast" category is actually my food for the entire day, which I just pureed and which is now in the fridge waiting for later when I've had half an hour past drinking my Protein Shake. I'd love some feedback; am I doing it right, or having too much or too little? I'm eating the amount that my doctor's office gave me but still, I worry. Getting feedback would really relieve some of my anxiety.

Thank you guys!

I just looked back in my records, and I was getting about 500 calories a day at three weeks out (over half of that being from Protein shakes). Fifteen pounds in three weeks is totally normal. It seems most people lose somewhere in the range of 15-25 lbs the first *month* (a few lose more, a few lose less). So 15 lbs in three weeks is right on target.

So you have the ''breakfast food'' plus 2 Premier shakes a day?

Seems to me like a lot of calories.

Double check with your surgeon's recommendation, 1,800 cal a day is a fairly large amount at this point.

If you have a nutritionist, you could revise with her.

No, no! The Breakfast is divided into three and eaten through the day. My calories are between 650 and 750 daily, usually. I was told to have 3 meals of pureed, 1/2 cup each, and two shakes a day. I can't remember the last time I had 1800 calories, lol.

Sounds like your on track. I never count calories. Just Protein. I also don't eat carbs even st this far out. So I would say keep measuring and counting your protein. Drink drink drink! Water will keep your metabolism going. You working out? Early on I could barely walk without my back going out. But I was able to doa bit of a leslie sansone video with a back brace. I have done her videos religiously since. Now I can do them with a light back brace and knee compression sleeves.

I was just about to post when I saw yours, ha! I am one week out and my doctor has graduated me to soft puréed foods. I was wondering if there are and sample daily plans out there? I like most anything, but am having a hard time knowing what to put on a grocery list other than cottage cheese and tuna, sugar free Jello and Popsicles. What are some good 2-7 week out foods that y'all would recommend? I'd love some suggestions! Thanks so much! Sally

Refried Beans with melted cheese. Tasted like heaven when I graduated to mushy foods.

Here are the guidelines I received from my nutritionist. Relax, your day looks fine.

  • 400-800 calories a day
  • 70-100 grams Protein a day or MORE
  • 50 grams carbs a day or LESS
  • 64 oz of Water or MORE
  • Multiply the remaining weight you have to lose by 3500. This gives you the caloric reserves you have to draw from as you follow a low calorie diet. Looking at your stats, it appears that you have 728,000 calories at your disposal. That is more than enough to compensate for the low calories.
  • Work up to being active 50 minutes a day/6 days a week

I actually said out loud today "why does food have so many calories?" When I went to my consult the PA put me on a diet where I eat every 3 hours no more than 4 ounces at a time and under 1500 calories.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
