Running my first half/full marathon

Recommended Posts

I am running my first big races this year and I'm very nervous because I'm afraid that I will not get enough food and Water in for the races. Any suggestions on how to do these races safely? I had a gastric sleeve January 2012.

Excited for you. I purchased a running belt. You can buy Protein gummies, meal bars and liquid fuel to carry in your belt. I also use a camelbak for Water. Just look them up online.

Many different thoughts on pre run meals. Everyone's body is different. As you train find the combination that works for you. This is what I found that has worked for me. Water intake is the same I eat Protein and oatmeal for a bit of carbs in the morning. Most of my runs are at 9:00am. On the way to the run I drink a Protein shake. On the run I carry the above items. After the race another Protein Drink.

I just did my first half yesterday. I had some oatmeal and 6 almonds before the race. During the race they will have Water stations and other types of electrolyte drinks for you. Then at the end of the race they had some oranges, banana's and Bagels, kind bars, coconut Water. When I was training I used one of the belts and would put Powerade zero in the two containers. I also use the Clif shot blocks when I run 10 or more miles. I have never done a full so I don't have any tips on that one.

Good luck-

When I run a half I eat overnight oats (oats, Greek yogurt, milk and Peanut Butter al mixed together and put in the fridge the night before) about 90 min before the start. I then have a shot blok every 2-3 miles to keep a constant stream of energy (a serving is 3 bloks but they make me sick if I try to have 3 at one time). I also alternate Water and Gatorade/powerade but really try to make sure I drink a bunch. Good luck!
