shayshay85 5 Posted September 7, 2015 everyone, I am in the pre surgery, looking at a surgery date of end of November/beginning of December. But I was hoping to hear from sleevers who were/are diabetics and how your diabetes has changed since surgery, and if you wish you had done RNY instead. I'm a type 2 diabetic, horrible blood sugars and on multiple medications (insulin, victoza, amyral, metformin and invokana). So I am primarily looking at surgery for blood sugar control help. I'm 5'10" and 250. Weight loss will be a bonus but I'm trying trying to decide which surgery is better for blood sugar control. My endocrinologist suggested sleeve surgery but the surgeon thinks RNY. I'd be so greatful to hear how it helped you. I posted this in the sleeve section as well- since I would like to hear about both surgeries. Thank you so much! SkinnyDown 409 Posted September 7, 2015 Hi @shayshay85 I had RNY Gastric Bypass surgery on May 20th of this year. I had some complications during my surgery, so I stayed in the hospital a week after surgery. By the end of that week I was no longer on 2 oral diabetes meds I previously took (Metformin and Glipizide), and 2 types of insulin (Minimum 4 injections daily). My A1c went from 9.2 pre-surgery, to 6.1 post-surgery. I have another A1c test coming up on the 17th, and if it's 6.0 or below, my Dr. will consider my diabetes in remission. If I gain weight again, it's most likely I would become insulin resistant again. I have had fairly normal blood sugar readings ever since. I can only speak for myself, but I do believe others here have had similar experiences, and are off all or greatly reduced dosages of their diabetes meds. I'm sure some of them will share their experiences too. I never thought I'd see a day where I didn't have to give myself multiple injections. It's been wonderful, and I'm pretty close to not having to monitor my blood sugars anymore too! My Diabetes specialist told me that herself. Good luck with everything! James Marusek 5,244 Posted September 7, 2015 I had RNY surgery 28 months ago. I was on the maximum dosage of Metformin and Glipizide and even at that my diabetes was not under control and my doctor recommended I go to insulin. When I left the hospital 2 days after surgery, I was off all my diabetic medicine and my diabetes has been in remission ever since.
Cheri_j 117 Posted September 7, 2015 I've had Type 2 Diabetes for over 20 years. I was taking Metformin and 120 units of Lantus daily. My A1C was over 12. My surgeon said because of the diabetes, he recommended the RNY, but needed to get my A1C under 9 before he would do the surgery. That was my motivator. I had the surgery and when leaving the hospital, told to stop taking all of my diabetes medicines. I still have to monitor my blood glucose closely because now I have a tendency to have low blood sugar, but it's been almost six weeks and I've been medication free!!! Madeleine Renee 77 Posted September 7, 2015 Only RNY will cure your diabetes. It has to do with digestion and enzymes. Just losing weight through the sleeve is not enough. I have been diabetic for 20 years, before surgery, I was on 75 u of humalog insulin through a pump and onglyza pill in the morning. Now, I am at 20 u a day and my endo is talking about taking the insulin OFF completely. I am 3 weeks pass surgery. I have lost 20 lbs. I would discuss this with surgeon again, mention it to your endo, and research a bit, RNY is the best surgery for you if you want to get rid of diabetes. Good luck. dwinette 21 Posted September 7, 2015 I had the RNY on 04/27/15 I was taking Metformin. After the surgery I was taken off meds. I haven't had to take them since. My surgeon recommended the RNY bc of my diabetes. Thank the Lord I did it!

calmspirit74 0 Posted September 3, 2016 We have almost the same story. I'm 5'9, 250. Surgery expected in early December. My last weight loss visit is in November. I also am a diabetic taking tanzium insulin, lantus insulin, metphormine, invokana, and amyral. Plus high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I've talk to 3 different doctors and was told that gastric bypass gets quicker results for reversing diabetes. When they do the bypass your food doesn't go thru the part of the stomach that triggers insulin production. My sister also had a bad case of type two diabetes. She had her bypass about five years ago. She was off of all her diabetic meds the day after her surgery. She wears a size zero now. LibraryLadyDW 2 Posted September 7, 2016 I was in a similar situation, but I'm 5'3" and was 253 lbs. with type 2 diabetes and on 3 diabetic meds. I had RNY on Feb 1 of this year on the advice of my surgeon. He thought I had the best chance of improving my situation with RNY and I'm glad he advised me in this direction. I've lost 75 lbs and my blood sugars fall in the normal range. Good luck to you! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
nurseangel007 7 Posted September 8, 2016 I had the mini gastric bypass. Not true that only RNY will cure diabetes . I did not have Not RNY nor the sleeve. I had an a1c of 10. I was off all diabetic meds after I went home from hosp. Surgery 8/25 blood sugars are in normal range Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

KristenLe 5,979 Posted September 10, 2016 @@shayshay85 I am getting the sleeve. If I were in your position - I'd do RNY. I believe you will need the malabsorption part of RNY. Good luck.
shayshay85 5 Posted September 10, 2016 Well I've proved everyone here wrong. I ended up getting the sleeve and after only 6 months, my a1c is down from 10.9 at surgery date 12/22/15 to 5.3 as of Mid July. I'm off all meds but the metformin because I still have PCOS and will probably take the metformin for life. I'm so glad I got the sleeve, my recovery was quicker, I'm losing weight slower, which for a person like me only needing to lose 75-80lbs total, that's a good thing, and it's allowing me to become the athlete I always wanted to be because I can still eat enough to fuel my body for the 10k's I'm running and all the weights I'm lifting. I hope other people read this and see that you don't have to do RNY to gain control and reverse diabetes!
