Any type of sugar and full on Dumping :(

Recommended Posts

Well I am 3 weeks out - early days I know, but I am one of the unlucky/lucky? ones with full on dumping. It first started with anything dairy - so lactose intolerant i thought - but i was on the toilet with the worst cramps and runs within 10-20 minutes of eating/drinking anything with lactose in it. Then can the fructose dumping - on my 3 week puree stage on my allowed list was apple/fruit puree with no added sugar - same thing 10-15 minutes later on the loo flushing it all out (Sorry for the too much info)

And today just to confirm things i had a single bite of high cocoa chocolate (don't flame me it was for the experiment and wouldn't damage my sleeve) and sure enough within 15 minutes same thing....

So it looks like I am having to go just about totally sugar free - one side of me is sad I want cheese and sour cream as a Condiments for my Proteins (yes even these make me dump :0( ), but on the other side I am kind of happy it's forcing me to stay away from sugars. Considering how well/fast I am healing I need the extra help on making right choices early on.

For anyone else who has had fairly extreme dumping like this how long did it last? Did you ever "grow" out of it or has it stayed there long term? Were you able to tolerate sugar free alternatives or did they bring about their own problems?

Thanks for your advise!

Hello,

I am the same way. I am 2 weeks out and had some cabbage Soup broth with some of the cabbage pureed in it and dumped, I also had a non-sugar free popsicle (it was late and I was desperate) - dumped. I also called my doc and asked if I could have sugar free hard candy, they said I could have mints, well... I too dumped on that, and have found that crystal light makes me feel bloated and interally like something isn't right. I was told not many people dump after the sleeve, but clearly I am like you one of the unlucky/lucky ones.. I haven't fully committed to either. However, I am leaning on the lucky side because I need this tool to really keep me in check... especially in the beginning.

You're 3 weeks out. It's not dumping. It's just your sleeve being too early out to tolerate certain things. That's why you stick to the diet given to you until you're allowed to move forward slowly...to see what is and isn't tolerated early on. Your stomach has been cut into a third of itself and stapled closed. Of course there are things it can't tolerate quite yet. Give it time to heal, and you'll find you'll be able to eat more things you couldn't early out.

And FYI...dumping isn't just diarrhea. It usually comes with other symptoms such as feeling faint, cold sweats and dizziness because it's usually related to a blood sugar drop.

I was just about to type what Babbs said.

At 3 weeks out I had explosive diarrhea after every Protein shake.

That didn't last forever.

We go through so many post-op changes and phases. (I can just hear the folks 5 years out going, "Yeah, you just wait!")

;)

I was told by three of my Doctors that Dumping doesn't happen with the sleeve..

As Babbs said above, you don't have dumping syndrome. Your body is still healing and you are trying to rush food. You should follow the set diet given to you and only advance slowly to solid foods.

When you have dumping syndrome you feel like you are going to die. You may have heart palpitations, begin to sweat, have a Migraine, etc., not just the diarrhea.

FYI: When you finally get on solid food you will experience the opposite of what you now experience. You will be constipated and may not go to the bathroom for a week or longer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
