Medications and weight gain.

Recommended Posts

You know I never really thought about it. But I am on ALOT of meds that can cause weight gain.

Prozac

Depo shot

Steroids and steroid shots

Tizanidine

An OAB medication that causes Fluid retention sometimes.

And I'm sure there's more. I take 15 prescriptions all together.

What happens after my surgery? Should I switch medications? I definitely want to switch out Depo I started the shot in March and have gained 40lbs on top of my steroids.

Thoughts?

Speak with your surgical team. They will help you come up with a plan for what meds needs to be temporarily discontinued for surgery and what you will need to continue. Do not discontinue meds without checking with them. Even on meds you can and will lose. I take a daily antihistamine (Zyrtec). I sometime have to also take a second pill and/or benedryl. Antihistamine's slow your metabolism. Discontinuing them is not an option. I have chronic uteria & angeodema. Not taking them means I break out in head to toe painful, itchy hives and/or facial swelling. Even though my weight loss has not happened as fast as some, I still have been able to steadily lose.

My surgeon will not discontinue any meds. That will be up to the dr that prescribed them. As you lose weight some of your conditions will improve and you may come off that med all together. I know some meds you have to be weaned off of,

so definitely talk to the prescribing dr before you stop any.

As others have said, talk to the doctors that prescribe the meds in question. They will know how to adjust and when to remove them all together.

For me, I was on a couple of blood pressure lowering meds. Two of them were extended release versions. As you may know, you can't take extended release meds (even over the counter) after surgery. So my PCP and her nurse had to change the dose of these 2 meds. One of them I now take half of a tiny pill twice a day. The other one really sucks. They only make the 'immediate release' version of this med in a very low dosage. So I have to take 3 capsules 3 times a day, for a total of 9 capsules! It sucks, but I'm hoping to be off of both meds within the next 6 months.

I was on the depo shot years ago (like 20 years ago). It has it's pros and cons. But work with your doctor on alternatives.

And as others have said, things may really change after you start losing serious weight. I understand that you want to remove any and all obstacles that may affect your weight loss. But keep in mind that those meds are helping your body in one way or another. And as your weight changes, you may no longer need them. Just trust in the process. Patience is difficult to keep in situations like this. But having surgery should trump all of those meds in the long run.

Keep the faith! Make sure you get in all of your Water to help flush out any Fluid retention. Try to start changing your habits now, like exercising. Remember that you have the power to take the reigns of your own health. Don't be a victim to the side effects. You will prevail regardless of the hurdles that you will face. Victory will be even sweeter if you are eventually able to jump those hurdles. It will take time. Hang in there.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
