Prozac and Gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

My surgery was June 4, I am down 38pound. I just started to take prozac. I am worried that I am not going to lose weight because anti depressants make you gain. Does anyone take anti depressants and notice weight loss stalled?

I've been on Effexor (75 mg) for awhile, since about a year before surgery, so I couldn't say whether my loss is slower because of it, but I'm averaging 3.3 lbs per week since surgery. I do know that I'd be a mess without it, so for me it's a moot point.

I've actually taken both Effexor and Prozac (not at the same time) as well as many other SSRI's and antidepressants. Most SSRI's can make you gain weight (5-10 pounds), but not near as much as the psychotropic meds (Seraquil, Zyprexa). I switched to Welbutrin a few weeks before surgery because its doesn't cause weight gain and is suppose to decrease cravings and binge eating. It seems to be working okay for now.

Some psychotropic and antidepressants actually increase your craving for carbs and effect blood sugar (Abilify) so be careful. I don't remember exactly why or how, but ask your doctor or read your drug warning sheet if you want more information. Not everyone experiences the same side effects on these drugs, so only time will tell if it will cause weight gain. The best you can do is stick to the guidelines and Bariatric Eating plan.

I take a combination of Wellbutrin and Prozac. I'm not sure if it effects weight loss or not as I was on this for a time before surgery. I did lower my dose of Wellbutrin before surgery and increased the dosage on the Prozac. All in all, without the meds I'd probably be a complete ball of anxiety.

I've been on Prozac for years, and am still losing weight post sleeve. I'm 1 week shy of being 3 months postop and am down 50 lbs since surgery day.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
