Miralax vs. Milk of magnesia or others? Help.

Recommended Posts

It has been 8 days. Stomach hurts. I have been walking, taking fluids, and Probiotics everyday.

I have a 7 hour drive tomorrow. If I take Miralax tonight will it be an issue tomorrow?

Any other immediate relief recommendations?

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Miralax takes time to work, so I wouldn't bank on that. If you're looking for immediate relief, you can consider a suppository or enema.

Milk of Mag usually works within a couple of hours. My first steps were MOM, then an enema, and a daily stool softener after that (with your doctors approval). I hope you feel better. That's no fun!

Milk of magnesia works within 2 hours for me, like a charm. Make sure you drink some extra Water with it.

If you take Milk of Magnesia tonight, you will go way before your trip in the AM.

I didn't go for 2 or 3 days pre-op, so by 3 days post-op, my abdominal has pain was horrendous (couldn't even pass gas). Mirilax takes time, and I needed faster relief. I took 3 oz of milk of magnesia before bed. At 6:30 am, I woke up, and let's just say I was all cleared up quickly.

I was nauseous and uncomfortable when I woke up, but I think that's true for most laxatives, and it went away once it was all done "going."

I had surgery July 27th. Still can't go with out taking something. Also I feel like my bowels just are not working right anymore.... TMI but like I don't have any muscle to go.

So I took the milk of magnesia. But I couldn't drink Water as it said to do without heavy nausea. I fell asleep, woke up at 430am and still felt nauseous. Took my meds with water and it cleared out. Not much of anything. But better than nothing. Thanks all for the advice.

am just over a year post op and I feel the exact same way. I rarely go without a suppository.

Whatever you take, I hope it works soon. I developed hemmroids in the worst way so I have been taking senokot every morning now just to keep things soft. I still don't go everyday, but never go over 2 days. After 2 different occasions of "this", I have learned thst a stool softener/mild laxative is my best friend!

Good luck

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
